Have an old AMD 3700+ 64 bit chip sitting around.

With an accompanying motherboard.

I upgraded my computer from 2005 last year and built a decent rig focused around a Phenom II 960. Just some background.

Now the question is, what should I do with the bastardized 3700+ rig? I've considered:

-FTP server
-HTPC

However, I feel like the thing would be too loud and consume too much power for an FTP server. As for as an HTPC goes, MAYBE, but at the same time I think I'd be better off with a more modern CPU in terms of performance/efficiency.

Any other suggestions or comments?
Thanks!

Post it on craiglist for $50-$75 and see if anyone will take it off your hands? That would get you quite a ways towards a much more efficient and capable rig (as you've touched on...) :)

Something like a SB based Celeron/H61 combo is going to be much more useful, IMHO.

Yeah? You think someone would buy it for that much used and all? I guess that's not a bad idea. I think I'll try that.

Haha, I have no idea. But it's Craiglist. It might sit there for a month, it may sell tomorrow. Who knows? It seems to have it's own economy and pricing...

I think it helps if you don't have a Microcenter nearby though, but then again, some people just use Craigslist without considering many of the alternatives.

If you bundle in the DDR (and you have 1GB sticks) I would think it could actually go pretty quick because someone will want the ram. I'd keep it bundled though, so the Mobo/CPU moves.

Is it a 754 or 939 chip?

For some reason the AMD s754 3700+ used to fetch some good money on ebay a few years ago. I sold my s754-3700+ in 2009 for $150 (which was common) and after the auction was over I had three people ask me to notify them if a seller fell through. I was shocked, as the chip was a dog at the time, IMHO. Used that money build a e5200+4GB DDR2 800 RAM+new Gigabyte motherboard for $150.

Yea, I had a Socket 754 3700 that I sold in ebay for a bit under $200 in summer of 07 I think. Dunno what the market is like on it now, but I was surprised at the demand for it then.

I have an old 3700+ with a decent HSF on it (Arctic Cooling Freezer 64) and its extremely quiet. Doesn't use much power or put out much heat (have CnQ enabled).

Convert it into an HTPC.. that's what I did with my 3200+.. but not a full blown HTPC with modern gaming and full bitrate bluray capabilities.. but it serves as a bedroom HTPC that can easily handle 720p mkv's for late night viewing and even some old school gaming.

With the right graphics card it can make a very nice BD capable HTPC. You can also lock the speed to 1ghz and undervolt it to 0.9V to make it sip a tiny amount of power if you want a 24/7 ftp server. You can also eBay it and put that towards a better rig. You'd be surprised how many people want the fastest chip on an old platform simply because they don't want to reinstall windows.

I hear way too many people throwing away their electronics, so I just thought I'd put in my two cents and say do anything but that. Turn your old electronics into abstract art or jewelry or high-tech wallpaper, just as long as it doesn't end up in a landfill for thousands of years.

Others suggested selling through craigslist. I've heard good things about this electronic scrap recycling company that supposedly pays the most for e-waste. Maybe check them out?

Had a 939 mobo + 3500+. Threw in a couple of crap 128MB DDR1 DIMMs and sold the bundle for $50 on Craigslist.

Turned right around and used that $50 to buy :
($39.90 - $40MIR) MSI P67A-G43-B3
~$54 Pentium G2020

Waaaay more powerful :p
