Have AGP 4x problems been resolved with Athlon chipsets? Which cards the problem?

I was considering a Geforce2 MX but I have a 756 chipset (the later slotA chipset). I believe it only does AGP2x and that the Geforce plays up. At least that's the kind of rumour I've read around here!

My limited experience is that there are several issues to deal with. Irongate chipsets only support up to AGP 2X max. Nvidia Det3 and newer drivers detect Irongate chipsets and defeat AGP 2x if they see it because of problems with older Irongate chipsets. The ordinary registry hacks don't correct this problem. Newer Irongate chipsets work just fine at AGP 2X. The Powerstrip program will switch AGP to 2X if you include it in your startup group. If you find another fix that works let me know, I have tried about a dozen that don't.
