Have a question about window air conditioner units

Ordered an LG window air conditioner (model LW060CS) and it was delivered today. I've never used AC before so I'm not sure really what this mystery vent serves a purpose for. There is a vent on the top of the cabinet (on the right side towards the back). It is definitely on the outside of the window which makes me wonder about water dripping into it from rainstorms.

I can clearly see some electrical components off to the side (not directly under the vent) but why the hell would you have it so that water can build up inside?

If anyone wants to take a look at it they can see a picture in this pdf
Its the first model shown (LG060CS)

Yes, the venting must be exposed to the outside. After all, air conditioners are just fancy heat exchangers and nothing more.

Don't worry it being exposed to rain... it will survive just fine. ;)

If not I guess the two year warranty part and labour will help :)

The only problem with it so far has been that they sent insufficient amounts of mounting hardware (sent me three and one pieces instead of two and two) and the fact the UPS tards must have dropped it cause there is a dent in the side of the unit but not worth driving to Futureshop for a replacement over it.
