i have heard that the 8800gt is going to be pci-e 2.0. i also heard that 2.0 is backwards compatible to 1.0 and 1.1. is this true
 
yes. all pci-e 2.0 cards will be backwards compatible with previous pci-e versions. pci-e 2.0 has added bandwidth capability and provides 150w power vs 75w for older versions.
