Have a question about Cox digital cable box and digital audio out?

OK my digital cable box has a digital coax output. I hooked it up to my receiver but only some channels have sound, so i have to use normal RCA stereo cables to get sound and it is not where near as clear.

So whats up with this? Is it because the some stations are really just analog and the cable box sucks enough that it can not extract the analog audio signal to a digital one?

This is a Cox box supplied to me 2 years ago lol

I have the same problem with the tuner in my TV, it only outputs digital with digital channels.
My Motorola HD DVR from my cable company however does out put DD 2.0 even on an analog channel.
