Have a question about car insurance claim

I found a note on my windshield today with a broken side mirror. Apparetly someone hit my car when it was parked on the street. She provided a phone number for me to call so she can give me her insurance info. Now my question is:

#1 - do I need a police report? Sorry I am a total noob with insurance, never had anything like this happen before.

#2 - will it affect my rates? my car was parked legally and wasn't moving so I figure it won't but what the heck, I don't want my rates increasing over a $50 side mirror.

#3 - do i need to call my insurance company?

Thanks.

just call the person and see if the person will pay for the damage
you get 1-2 estimates, the person gives you a check

or

the person gives you big run around and you have to call your insurance

I agree with Fobot. Call. Find out how much it would be to have it repaired. Call said person and say listen its going to cost such and such and I have a est, do we really want to go through or insurance, hell this mirror prolly wont be as much as your deductible and who want our rates to go up ove a stupid mirror.

Most people would much rather handle it out of insurance, unless they have a zero dedutable policy, then they wont care and would rather go though the insurance. At that point you get thier infor and give it to your insurance and have them handle the matter for its what you pay them per month to do.
