a lot...it would affect all the people making minimum wage, the people who pay minimum wage, and the people who make more than minimum wage but would still get a certain percentage higher to stay competive with those making minimum wage.

Estimates are around 8 million people will get some form of wage increase if it went up ~$2. Note: they might not get a full $2 raise. For example, suppose minimum is $5.15 and you make $5.50 and suppose that minimum went up to $6.15. What raise do you get? You might get a $0.65 raise. Or you might get $1 raise. Or most likely, you get something in the middle, about $0.80 or so. This is called a spillover. The number without counting spillover is about 7 million. One of many sources.

The potential drawback of course, is that businesses will be hurt. However, as this Walmart example shows, the companies that pay minimum or near minimum often are the same companies that will benefit from their customers suddenly having a lot more money. Thus the drawback is lessened from what it could be.

Yes, some businesses will be harmed, some may even close. Some employees will be fired. However, as a whole this isn't a big deal (especially at times like now when unemployment is low). The working poor take 20 steps forward, but have to take one step back due to some getting fired.

As mentioned above, this is a no brainer for Walmart.

1) Walmart already pays above minimum wage. Thus this will have a negligible cost to Walmart. Suppose minimum went up $1, then Walmart will probably give their employees less than a $0.25 raise (since Walmart still wants to claim that they are above minimum, they will likely do a minor bump).

2) Walmart customers are often minimum wage people. If minimum went up $1, then many of Walmart's customers will be nearly 20% richer. If minimum went up $2, then many of Walmart's customers will be nearly 39% richer. Simply put, Walmart will have an absolutely massive increase in sales.

3) Walmart's cometitors will be hurt. Their competitors are the ones paying minimum wage.

Overall its win-win-win for Walmart. Have a laugh at The Linuxator LOL.

QFT. He only posted this in OT because he get 'pwned' like this from nearly everyone there as well. Maybe he should post on Disney's forums?

So, if you make $20 per hour and minimum wage increases $1, do you expect to automatically get a raise to $21 per hour?

Wal-Mart pays above minimum wage, so how is that being hypocritical?
