I build my linux from scratch using the linuxfromscratch guide and the BLFS guide. I folowed all the instructions for itstalling XFree and Gnome in the BLFS document and need some help, First. How do I make XFree load applications (such as gnome) and not attach it to the mouse and load the window after you click. (it has an outline of the application and loads the window after I click) next, I need some help with gdm, I cant login as root or anyone. it does not give my the password field, it just tells my that authentification failed.

Well, I'm not exactly sure where the configs would be on your custom distro, but what you have going on with the outline thing is related to the window manager. You are probably using the twm window manager which is usually the default. You may want to install something like blackbox for a standalone wm or perhaps sawfish if you're trying to get gnome working. I believe it's a common one to come along with gnome.

AFAICT, gnome doesn't do window managing by itself, it needs something else for that, i.e. sawfish. But I could be wrong, don't spend much time in the gui and when I do it's all whatever redhat has configged... console all the way baby! ;)

correct. gnome used to use sawfish, nowadays they use metacity. way back they used enlightenment. redhat 8 uses metacity.

AHH this makes sence. Thnx. The least gnome could do is have its own window manager :) ohh well. more compiling for me.

That's definitely unusual. While it might not be the source of your problems, you should probably start it through init scripts as outlined in the BLFS book and hints.

And if you're not already subscribed, get on the blfs-support mailing list - the people there can spot typical LFS misconfigurations more quickly than here just because they see it all the time.
