Have A Few Questions...Hard Drives...CD Burners...

Alright, I know the max capacity on parallel ata is 127 GB or something right? How soon will we see hard drives go above that? Will we see anything larger before serial ata, when is that due out?

Also, what is the max write speed on cd-r's gonna end up at?

Thanks,

Intersting way to define regular old IDE....

Anyways, MAXTOR has had a 160GB version for retail for quite a while now, and you can get a Seagate 7200rm 180GB SCSI drive for about $1100

I assume the 200GB isn't too far away.

120GB WD's use 40GB platters

a 160GB would use four

a 200GB would use 5 platters

and so on.. Id oubt they will be haste to move to such a new technology... a short time in which to have market fully penetrated is tough

This is assuming both the top and bottom of the platters equates to 40GB's...I am not sure on that one

Thanks for the info on the 60x/16x Jizzler and the info on the hdd goose.

Umm..i dont quite understand why there can be a 160GB drive if the standard max is at 137Gb?

You need to understand why the "standard max" is 137GB.

IIRC, ATA-33 thru ATA-100 use 24-bit addressing to calculate the amount of storage that can be
made available on a hard drive. ATA-133 switched to using a 48-bit addressing scheme, which
is why it can see beyond the old limit.

<< So what is the limit to ata133, at 48bit, its gotta be more that 300GB... >>

Quoted from Jizzler

<< ATA133 raises the 137GB limit to a whopping 144PB I believe. >>

Seems about right, I do remembering be in the PB range.
