Owning a trampoline could 'bounce' you from your insurance company

Story Created: Dec 2, 2008 at 4:33 PM EST

Kids think they're nice, but some insurance carriers think they're naughty. It's one big-ticket toy your carrier could 'bounce' you for owning.

"Trampolines promote injuries; injuries promote lawsuits; insurance companies don't want a lawsuit," says Scott Rowan of The Rowan Group in Whitesboro.

Broken bones, lost teeth, head injuries.....all are concerns for some house insurance carriers. How large of a concern - and how the carrier handles it - depends on the carrier.

"Some carriers just don't even consider them as an underwriting concern; some carriers just literally will not write you if you have one," says Rowan.

Some insurance carriers handle the problem by asking clients who own trampolines to sign an exclusion, which states the carrier will not cover any claims stemming from injuries suffered on the trampoline.

So, what if you own a trampoline but never thought to call your insurance agent?

Should you call now?

At least one agent says, 'yes'.

"I can tell you that as an insurance agent, I would appreciate it if my customers did; I would more proactively try to help them, if they're going to have a trampoline, what's the safest way to go around it."

Yep, our insurace has a $100/month premium if you have one. I'm sure that everyone that owns one reports it though

Did you watch "The Man Show" back in the day? They had a segment called "Girls on Trampolines" so yes... bouncy-bouncy meant trampoline + b00bs in that case.

It wouldn't be covered most likely if you didn't disclose it to the insurance.

Why the hell would they not cover tree damage. Jesus, almost makes one wonder why he bothers paying for insurance at all.

my auto insurance is through a pseudo brother in law, he won't write us up for renters because we have large dogs.

State farm has no problem with them/never asked.

After seeing the stunts I've seen on sites like break.com with these things I can't really blame them.

Geez...what is next? Your premium goes up if you decide to make mowing the lawn a part of your kid's chores since the equipment might injure them?

This crap needs to end.

That was one of the best shows ever. Totally low-brow, appealing only to the basest of male instincts. But they were so open about it. I'd actually rather watch girls in skimpy outfits bounce on a trampoline then go to a strip club. There's just something more titillating about skimpy clothes vs. buck naked.

Plus, the guys sat there and drank tap beer. I mean...sat there and drank tap beer. How cool is that?
