Hey, I am looking to buy my 1st car. I have appx. $8000 to spend. However, I don't want some crappy old assmobile. I would obviously like something that looks decent. 2 door or 4 door does not matter. Prefer if it gets 25+ MPG. I know some used beemers are out of the question =[

First rule, don't spend the whole 8000.

I really hope your not worried that some used bimmers are out of the equation, with a limited budget you got to drop the penius envy and realize that cars are just that, things.

No one is going to care what your driving. You don't score points for it. You don't win. All you do is blow tons of money to think you are.

As such... with your budget your first goals should be.

1. Reliability. Meaning you ain't going to get soaked for repairs or just routine maintenance
2. Insurance. As in, don't buy something that carries a premium to insure
3. Gas mileage. Buying anything that gets less than 25 today is just silly.

Older Toyotas and Hondas are great choices.

I only had 1200 to spend on my first car, lol.

If you want something very cheap and reliable an early 90s honda accord would be great and should run you around 1500 bucks

First car? You need something reliable, safe, and easy to drive.

I would look at Toyota's and Honda's first, Civic/Corolla or Accord/Camry you should be able to find nice examples below your budget.

a 1996 Camry or ES300 will run forever as long as you put gas and change the oil, and should be below your budget. You can find alot of these in decent condition since it's not really a ricer car

Prolly can get a 2004 if you look hard. Might want to look at an Escort or ZX2 and save some dough.

pick up a jetta 1.8t/vr6 , or a TDI if you'd prefer, it might be a bit older though (for the TDI). I am sure a low mileage 01+ jetta could be had around 8k

Recipe for death and/or super high insurance depending on OP's age.

Of course, you should always run the VIN when you think you might have a winner just to be sure exactly what was done and then get it inspected if you have concerns.

Death only if you drive like an idiot ;)

Insurance I can see, although I pay under $900 a year for my 98 camaro V6, and the insurance agent said the rate wouldn't be much different for a Z28. I am 20 with a clean driving record. Considering the amount he has to spend I doubt he's any younger than I am.

I had a 1966 Mustang GT with about 350hp at 17...despite popular demand I am still here.

Corolla or Civic, man. Considering you want good gas mileage and are buying your first car, I'd guess you're strapped for cash. Either of those will be reliable, and what repairs it does need will be cheaper than the average.

When I got my license at 17, I convinced my folks to let me buy a 91 Supra. I still drive it to this day, and repairs have been minimal, but that could've been a losing gamble. If you wanted something a little faster or more unique than a Civic or Corolla, consider something like an older MR2 (you probably cant afford a turbo) or a Firebird of some sort. I have to say, though, a fast car as your first is probably a bad idea. It was for me. I never got into any accidents, but I did a few stupid things that I probably shouldn't have. No one/nothing hurt or anything, but I probably should've had a slower car to start out.

A lot of people are assholes at that age, you are the exception not the rule.

It's irresponsible parenting to equip such an inexperienced driver with a car with that much power.

See Nick Hogan.

You can find a 2001-03 Volvo S40 turbo for around $8k. These cars are under-rated, as far as I'm concerned. They do give a lot of bang for the buck, and get good MPG, and look great....Stick with the '01 if you want to keep a grand for plates and insurance. Keep a few hundred dollars aside for a new battery/alternator/etc. You are buying a used car, and they all need maintenance, no matter what you get.
