if you get a MoBo with a VIA chipset, just stay away from SoundBlaster and everything will be a-okay.
i personally like Hercules over SB. better compatibility and great sound. i got a Herc Muse XL (512 voices) for $30. :D

that is a complete fallacy to say that SB Live do not work with Via. There was a few issues between the 686b and Via Northbridge that created some problems. Those problems have been addressed thru bios updates and the Via 4 in 1's. Besides, if you want an AMD system you will be hard pressed to find any motherboard that doesnt use the 686b southbridge

smash - dont just write off boards with the 686b chipset. Many boards, such as the Epox 8k7a have the amd-761 northbridge, and via 686b southbridge, and while it is true there are some compatibility issues with the sblive and some nic cards, they have all been sorted out with teh latest 4in1 drivers from via. personally, i haven't had any problems with my sblive and the chipset, so i didnt need to upgrade. (also, the epox 8k7a is one hell of a board, sblive incompatibilities or not)

Okay thanks for that. I was hoping to get a board with AMD-761 but then I saw they all had 686B and I got worried.

I'm running an old P3V4X (Apollo Pro 133A) with an SB Live! on Win2k. The crackling gets pretty annoying in my opinion. Since this seems to be a problem on almost all SB Live/Via/Win2k systems, I think it's a good reason to stay away from this combination. I don't know if the crackling occurs in Win98 though.

The P3v4x does not use the 686b anyway. My P3v4x had no issues with crackling sound (other than sounds that are just lousy to begin with) with Windows 98

I have the Epox 8KTA3+ and i have the newest bios flash and the newest 4in1 drivers from Via. Im running SP2 in Windows 2000 and the sound on my DVD playback using Power DVD is horrible. I get all kinds of pops and crackles playing DVD's. It seems to work fine in Windows XP though. I dont know if anyone can suggest any other things to try to aleviate the sound/DVD issue im having in 2k?
