Have 56K modem disconnect when call comes in?

Greets to the group -

I first asked this in the Networking forum, but that group is more geared toward routers and hubs and such.

I recently axed my broadband service and am presently limping along on a 56K modem. Quite simply, I'd like it to disconnect when a call comes in. You'd think that someone else would have wanted this at some point and there would have been a small shareware program out there, but I couldn't find anything.

Any thoughts, appreciated.

There are a few programs that will do this for you... can't think of any names at the moment, but do a search for "internet call waiting". Obviously, you have to have call waiting support from the telco, too.

This is also a built in part of the new V.92 modem standard, although there's very little hardware available and most ISP's aren't supporting it yet.

There are some "call waiting" modems out there that can detect the CW tone and let you know someone is calling and you can talk to them very briefly if you want to without losing net connection. Action Tech makes one. There are also external boxes that do the same from Command Concepts and I just saw another brand at CompUSA today. All new v.92 modems are supposed to have that feature but will require ISP support for longer interruption and other enhnced features.
Many standard modems handle call waiting tones by dropping the connection :), that's why you use the *70 prefix when dialing to shut CW off. Of course you have to have enhanced CW for that to work (here)--we can't turn off standard CW. IAC, if you don't have CW service, you'll never know if anyone is calling anyway, they'll just get a busy signal--which is the way it should be, IMO. CW IS RUDE!!! Get another real line if it's that important.
