There have been some leapfrog stuff going on with optics and medium to make 10gig commonplace. Thank om3 fiber and vcsels.

I wouldnt call it common still, I'd say its went from extremely rare to just rare. My organization is one of the only ones in my area with any 10g stuff according to my rep.

Meh, I'm finding my customers who never paid attention to their gig links finding out they are indeed having trouble and need 10g. Especially in the data center where the virtualization push just assumed bandwidth was unlimited.

Most people can deal with the upgrade to an etherchannel dual 1gb link and hold off for a bit, makes the twin gig slots more attractive since you can go dual 1gb now and go to 10gb later.
