Hauppauge Wintv pvr

I bought the wintv pvr for use at college and while I find it to be a good tuner, I have found its pvr features to be rather poor, using the scheduler to record does not work consistently and I would like more control over the recording settings (better control of the resolution and compression ratios uses) so I was wondering if anyone has the card and if so what program do you use to schedule and record shows (if you use the included programs and have them working properly then maybe you could report anything special you did to make it work or if it just worked of the bat for you) thanks.
