The Packard plant in Detroit Mi is a symbol of the rotting city...and it's finally scheduled to be demolished and cleaned up. Check out this interactive before-after photo gallery to see what once was. Move your mouse to the left to see today and to the right to see the past. Pretty cool!

It was on fire for most of the summer. Left a nice fog all over I94.

I suggest Detroit Urban Exploration's site: http://detroiturbex.com/content/industry/packard/index.html

He has some crazy photos:

Is that the plant where it took the city forever to figure who actually owns it?

its not the abandonment and dilapidation that is sad, its that so much of the damage was clearly caused by vandals. not going to have a pity party for how bad things are in some place where the trash and destruction is self-inflicted

Awesome photos. Does all of Detroit look like a post-apocalyptic wasteland or what?

Just certain large parts of it do. Downtown and most of midtown/Wayne State University is very nice. Also the Boston Edison, Indian Village and couple other isolated areas are actually quite nice. The rest of it....not so much...what's amazing to me even as a resident of southeast Michigan(but not Detroit) is that you can be in Eastern Market(another nice area) and walk about 3 city blocks and its back to scary burned out abandoned home area. The contrast is quite striking.

Wow, were those TREES I saw growing on the roof of the main buildings I saw there?

How the hell does trees grow from the roof or are they actually from ground level and penetrated the roof?

"In a post-apocalyptic decline, in an area not much different than the one today..." A purely fictional tale! :colbert:

From the article:

Cottonwood trees have colonized the roof of this sprawling complex, some standing more than 30 feet tall. Their roots are well-suited for growing in a shallow environment. Over time, fallen leaves build up a base of soil, allowing other species to take root as well. Grasses, plants, spiders and insects are now a common sight in the maze of rooftop rubble.
