Around here, an improperly secured load will get you a $1000 fine, and a criminal charge if someone is hurt because of it.

hence the "know your stuff" caveat. I could secure it so you could turn the truck over and hoist it up by the load.

If you have an older car, pickup, or van, open up the hood and the trunk (or find two attachment points) on the passenger side of the vehicle. Loop a strong rope around the hinges of the hood and truck (or other suitable attachment points). Hang the rebar, pipe, or whatever item is not much longer than your vehicle and tie it well. I have carried ladders, pipe, conduit, etc this way very safely. Sometimes the item lays over the passenger side mirror, just don't break it off.

My dad actually came out to help me transport it. We used his truck that had an 8' bed and tied it on the side of the truck if I remember correctly with me following some someone else didn't hit it. Like I said, I'm only 2 miles from HD, but his F150 is a '95 with scuffed paint. I didn't want to scuff up the pain job on my truck and he helped out bigtime. I had access to a 16' trailer, but didn't want to drive 25 minutes to pick it up and again to drop it off.

One of the old plumbing trucks had a removable rack system that hung off the edge of the bed in two places and one more stirrup at the front bumper. it was the bomb for small quantities of 20+ long stuff.
