Haswell Pentium G3258 for HTPC/Gamer Setup w/ 280x?

I'm considering pairing the G3258 with a 280x. It'd be either the 280x or an HD5770. Next choice would be the cheapest used i5, but the value on G3258 is enticing.

Wondering if the 280x is overkill when paired with G3258 and if the integrated GPU will be better than the HD5770.

It'll be mainly for netflix/web browsing/blu rays (would like bit streaming)/and gaming.

For games stuff like starcraft 2 and Bioshock Infinite and Fallout 3 Vegas and newest Dues Ex.

I like overclocking.

No and hell no. G3258 is extremely strong in single thread, so it is the ticket for older or more lightly threaded games. Current AA titles and future releases, maybe not so much. But I have seen a G3258 @ 4.0 do things I did not expect, like play BF4 mp at 1920 and Ultra with only occasional dips below 60.

I agree -- and by being on 1150, it does give you a pretty good upgrade path for stronger CPU's for a future upgrade. The G3258 is a great place to start -- in the long-term you'll probably migrate to an unlocked i5 when the budget allows.

You can play those games on a 5770. If you're trying to save money by going with the 3258, spending over $250 on a GPU doesn't make a lot of sense, especially for your uses.

By the way, Deus Ex is very choppy on two cores. I've tried it.

Well that tidies me up. I'm going to snag one and put under an artic freezer 13 pro and look for 4.0-4.5ghz+. I'll pair with onhand 280x, and possibly even a 290....

Should be good to go through most of my steam collection.

5770 is fine for those games at 720P

I personally wouldn't combine a 280x with a Pentium, I would go a little lower on the GPU or higher on the CPU, the g3258 seems to be extremely bad for some games like Watch Dogs, I think the g3258 is ideal for something like a 750 Ti or 260X
