Larry, would the 4130T be good enough? It's more in the price range and comes in a boxed set (cooler is really quiet on my Asus board when running on "Quiet" settings).

Edit: Seems I was looking at prices for the 4130, not the 4130T. Quite a bit higher for the 4130T version right now. Hmmmmmmm

Because... I want the 35W version. For my crowded mini-ITX rig with no chassis fan.

So? If you underclock the regular i3 to the same speed (2.9GHz), it should have a similar TDP to the T model. ThrottleStop can do it in software, with a checkbox allowing idling at the usual very-low power. The chip shouldn't overheat in the time it takes to boot; but if you're concerned there should be BIOS options too.

The ark shows only tray.

I never payed much attention to the tray/box on ARK until I seen a i5 4460s on ebay, searched it and could not find it anywhere except on ARK. It is only listed by tray prices. I bought it (probably will end up in my HTPC soon.) It was probably pulled for an upgrade. I guess the i3's aren't getting upgraded as much.

How about the 4160T (100MHz slower only difference)? On eBay right now (OEM) for $100 shipped.

...mod the case to add a fan? They make ones for slim systems.

Heck, you could even mount it outside the case if interior room is that rare.

Full disclosure: I have a 4670T (45w) in a thin-mini system, and it ran too hot until I modded the case to add a fan like that.

You can buy an i3 4130T, I actually considered it at one point but like already mentioned, if you get a regular you can underclock and undervolt it. I undervolt my i5 3550 (somewhat similar to the i5 3550S)

The 4130T comes in the Alienware Alphas, or at least it used to. I know there are many users upgrading their Alpha's to something else, so their should be plenty of them pretty cheap on Ebay.

For what it's worth I have a 4130T in my Alpha and it's a surprising little CPU for the wattage, especially for gaming.

Wonder how much power my wifes G1820 uses compared to the 4170T.I believe its rated for 54w but what kind of magic allows a higher clocked chip with HT to use less power?Do the clocks drop dramatically low when its fully utilized?

Is it all in the IGP?

I know that the G1820 is rated for 54W, but I highly doubt it draws that much, even at full load.
