Has your ISP ever limited your monthly bandwith because you were using too much?

Just wondering since I just set up my FTP and using it an awful lot. Guy at work here told me that I could get "capped" if they see my bandwith go over a certain amount...

It depends on your ISP. Some are pretty picky about total bandwidth, others don't seem to spend a lot of time worrying about it. I suspect it comes down to the capacity of the network and how close they are to capacity. Comcast just doubled the download speed of their network, and they've never complained about my 40-50gb/mo usage patterns. 🙂

My ISP don't limit how much you can download or upload at all. Only thing they don't like is for you to run a server 24/7.

Comcast will give you a warning and after 2 warnings, will terminate your service. Although their service agreement makes no mention of bandwith or dowloads, if you get on their top 10% of users, the letters begin. Back in November, Comcast increased their speeds to 3mb down. And at the same time, I discovered their DVD binary newsgroups. I downloaded 200 gig in November and received one of their warnings.

lucky you for even being able to grab stuff on newsgroups, I have a 1GB/month account from freaking giganews. I guess it depends on when and where you get your comcast :/ (my friend who has had it since at&t days still seems to have it...)

I'm sure he pays for his newsgroup service, I use SuperNews for my news. I also use up the free gigabyte that Comcast gives me on Giganews. 🙂 I guess my 50gigs don't hit the top 10 with folks pulling down 200gigs! 😀😀😀

I wonder how long before I get a letter from Comcast :/
