I just got back for a cleaning and repair a filling that came out. I don't really mind the novacain shot. But, when he is drilling the tooth and you start to feel the pain. Woops, not enough novacain. I do mind that. This has happened to me the last two times. I mean the whole area felt numb. I start to think I am making up the pain in my mind. No, way I can't make up that kind of feeling.

I'll ask my mom who is a hygenist (spelling) if maybe the dentist didn't give you enough novacaine or if your pain is mental

How much did it hurt on a scale from 1-10 ...

gittyup, was it on one of your lower molars? I have the same thing, the dentist said some people have some sort of additional nerves going there or something, and the usual shot doesn't completely block out the pain. For my other teeth the shot works 100%.

my dentist is very generous with the her drugs,... by the way she is a hottie too!!! usually i feel the pressure only and before she sticks the needle to the gum, she would put some novacain gel or something to numb the area so i don't even feel the needle.

one time with a root canal, i swear i must be bleeding like a girl during that time of the month... i can see a hella lot of blood yet felt nothing... she is soo.. cute.

at the end, she gave me some codine or something to ease the pain when the novacain wears off, the good thing is that the codine knocks me out cold so well, by the time i woke up next morning, NO PAIN! only problems, i drooled all over my pillow since half of my face was numb... :)

I have also heard the the upper jaw and the lower jaw have different porosity in the bone (so liquid drugs filter thru at different speeds and strengths). Perhaps he has just misjudged the amount needed to completely deaden the area.

The tooth was on the top in the center. I think he mis-judged the amount of drilling he had to do and didn't give me enough novacain.

my hottie dentist is a lefty so many times my face would be on her chest while she drill me... ;)

well the way the chair is set up the other side is the sink so she would have to wrap her arms around in order to see inside my mouth.

it is also possible you have are one of those people that does not respond to novacaine like everybody else. my brother took 2-1/2 times the novacaine he should have needed for his root canal.

I didn't take novacaine when I got my tooth filled.

same here.

Usually they give me novacaine then they wait a bit and then start slow but usually they give me enough. One time they didn't and I started to feel some pain so I told them and they reapplied some more.

one time. if 1-10, i felt like 9.99...i was almost crying cuz the pain was very very very painful....

Well, I decided I could live through it and by end of drilling, he finally realizes I was shedding tears and asked "are you in pain?"
