Don't belive so

Korea, Vietnam, etc., none were declared wars :(

The guys who fought certainly deserve the distinction of serving in one though (as do support folks).

What exactly did Congress vote on in the 1991 big-deal vote on war with iraq?

In a sense Bush Jr. declared war on terrorism and like his father bypass the Congress.

What about all the wars in the 60's and 70's with Israel? I'm sure some of those were declared.

Didn't Britian declare war on Argentina in '82?

That's all I could think of in 5 seconds.

A while back, DaveSohmer alluded to the ramifications of an official declaration of war, but I don't know specifically what he was talking about. This was when a bunch of people were upset about the fact that no war had been declared on Afghanistan, and it was unlikely that any possible war against Iraq would be declared either.

If the Chief could enlighten us, I would appreciate it.

There hasn't been a declared war since 1941. We have only declared war 5 times in our nations history.

The declaration of war does do some legal things that "use of force" authorizations do not. For example many life insurance policies are automatically void just by the declaration of war. The goverment is allowed to nationalize industries. There has to be a treaty or surrender signed in order to formally end a declared war, etc, etc. All military discharges are frozen. The selective service goes into a different gear. The list is endless but it is easy to understand why we don't declare war unless we really need to.

Thanks, I was just working on answering my own question, and what I was finding was that if the folks who were so upset about the lack of a declaration of war actually knew what it meant, they wouldn't be upset.

There seems to be a misconception that any action without a declaration is somehow illegal.

Now I have to get into an argument with my dad over it. :D

No kidding? How long has that been a policy?

I have no clue. It was something I read in either an interview with a Congressman or in the Congressional Record discussing the merits of declaring/not declaring war. It may be more accurate to say that many life insurance policies won't pay if the person being covered is killed during a war. In either case the formal declaration of war is the legal "tripwire" so to speak.

Congress has no declared war on another Nation since World War II.

Like everyone else said. The only way to prove it minus a history book, is to go over everything
Congress has done, since it declared war and show that it didn't.
Your going to have a hard time proving that something by paper or a link that something
hasn't happened.

As for War though. Though the "Wars" since WW II have been conflicts.
The country and armed forces treat the time while in conflict as War Time,
and war time laws apply. Meaning things like desertion could be punished
by death.
