Has the quantity of good musicians recently severely dwindled? or are we stuck with one hit wonders?

I was just wondering... because I happen to be a big fan of Modern Rock, not to say that modern rock has any really acceptional musicians but... almost every song that I hear is by a band that I haven't heard of before... for instance Hoobastank. Where did they come from? or Mushroom head...? admittedly we do have Rob Zombie, Syndrome of a down, Godsmack and a few others, but for the most part their all one or two hit wonders.

I'm getting tired of trying to find songs to download that I like... we're stuck with crap...

Your opinion????

Thank the recording industry. Do think they want a bunch of tempermental musicians running things? Hell no! They do NOT want thr Rolling Stones, or Led Zepplin, or Pink Floyd bands around. These big name bands run the show. Music = Money. Get a band in for a little while with the "right" sound, then toss em for another. That's how it works. The recording industry controls the radio stations, (dont believe it? Go look at the internet playlists for some of those radio stations). I listen to the college/inde stations if I can. Try that out for something different.

in one word, yes. he guy above me summed it up pretty good. Although I can see certain bands like creed staying around for a while and producing a lot of albums.

Syndrome of a down, you mean System of a down who I don't really care for. How about Tool, Static-x, Stained (suck also), NIN, Bboys. There are alot of them out there if you want to spend the time to look. Also, local bands are always fun too. I really enjoy the small stage and lively crowd.

It you listen to the mainstream radio stations, MTV, VH-1, and buy CD's from big-name labels -- you'll tend to hear the same thing over and over. They tend to foster bands that will capture the largest market share. It's not good or bad, it's just the way the system works.

In the car I listen to a station that specializes in less-popular bands and off-beat genres. I don't generally care for a lot of the local bands I hear, I haven't heard many good ones. (I've probably just heard too much of my brother's "emo" music, which I somehow can't get into.).

There is plenty of great music out there -- you just have to find it.

I think it's all crap, with the exception of a few songs (can't even think of any right now).

90% of the music I listen to is classical, the other 10% is of the "trance" genre.

we're getting old man... sooner or later all the songs we like are going to be played on oldies stations. right now I feel main stream pop music has totally turned to boy groups and pop singers like b-spears. The days when bands like NIN, Stone Temp Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins and Red Hot Chilli Peppers where pumpin out hit after hit are over. Modern Rock and the recording industry have moved on to appeal too younger crowds... As much as I hate to admit it, little girls and boys LOVE people like Britney and Nsnyc... and those young girls and boys are the teenagers of the future and where the moneys at for these industries.

I've almost given up on the radio completely.. all I listen to is electronica music and good rap when i can find it.

Local bands is where it's at right now, for sure. I just recently gained a new favorite - Seth Bernard. I don't even like his style of music (folk) all that much, but he man is amazingly talented. You won't see him on any major record label though, ever.

See, the thing about it is that you're comparing the best singers of the 1980's to the best singers of this week....

Look back at some billboard chart from 1982 and you'll see 1 or 2 songs you recognize and then a whole bunch of crap...

I think that there are still good bands around, but there are a lot of one-hit-wonders around to dilute the group

Wow, you used the term "Modern Rock"... when I think of that, I think like when bands like EMF were around just before the explosion of Seattle.
The evil recording industry knows that it's easier to feed the masses with mass-produced crapola and better for profits too. Developing a band takes mucho $$... it's so much easier have old bands sell out... (ie Metallica, Aerosmith, U2, etc.)

Don't get me wrong, I love rock, but I think even the greatest bands (Lepplin, Beatles, Rush, etc) have nowhere near the musical talents of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, etc.

That's because we do not foster psychotics in the music industry today. They could all be somewhat strange (and of course drinking and drugs is always present in music throughout time) but those great composers really were insane.

Until the power of the Big Labels is reduced in the industry, and people don't get all the money for one hit, it's gonna stay stagnant like this. Until that happens, go to your local club and see some local shows.

There are plenty of great bands out there, you just have to hit the underground to find them.
Pretty much the only good bands on the radio right now are Tool and System of a Down. The only reason they are on the radio is because they are heavy but not thrash (which fits the modern rock formula for the time being). The reason those two are so good will just blow right over most people's heads. They've been lucky enough to appeal to a wide audience while maintaining their integrity, by providing listeners with multiple "levels" to enjoy their music on.

But the real interesting stuff is happening on the indie emo scene. And no, if you heard their song on the radio, they're not emo, or at least not anymore.

Get down to your local music club and check out the people playing there. Generally it's very cheap to get in to those places and they usually have 3 or 4 bands play. One of them you're bound to like.

Yes!!! Every major city and not-so-major city has a number of very talented, creative, and driven bands and musicians. Get out of your house and out of the record stores! Go to your bars, clubs, and theaters and see some local talent today!
