Although the way the news "lies" is usually just in exaggeration and spin, but such things are in almost every story. My advice is to take everything that you hear from the news media with a grain of salt, as they are in general more interested in "story" than in "truth".

Good quick examples: "Shattered Glass" and Michael Crichton's book "Airframe" (while a work of fiction, Airframe is excellent in its accurate portrayal of pulp media).
