Has the Federal Government done anything important domestically in the last 20 years?

There is so much discussion about what the federal government should do. But have they done anything important domestically in the last 20 years? I'm a fan of gridlock and I'd love it if Congress and the president would just chill out on passing new laws. It's not like they do much good. Sarbanes-Oxley? Waste of time that hasn't stopped corruption. Obama health care reform? Half-assed measure that doesn't satisfy conservatives or liberals. About the only think I was a fan of was the bipartisan unemployment reform in the 90s and I have a hunch the effects of that reform have been a drop of the bucket compared to our current income/spending problems.

What do you think? What has the federal government done in the past 20 years that you think we couldn't have done without?

They've kept a lot of wing nuts busy. You know, the foam at the mouth kind that otherwise would be organizing new chapters of the KKK and militias ready to blow up federal buildings. They also built a whole bunch of new prisons to put them in and the FBI still regularly cracks down on them. Between Fox News and the clowns in office they keep the more peaceful ones distracted while everyone else tries to get on with their business.

There's a lot more I could go into, but thats the more sensational stuff.

Hmm... you mean new legislation or actual government functions and agencies such as FDA, NIH, NASA, DOD, DHS, SSA, FAA, DOT, etc...

I'd love it if Congress and the president would just chill out on passing new laws.

Considering that the product of Congress is legislation, pumping out vast quantities is what they do. It's like GM in the '70s and '80s selling huge numbers of vehicles that were defective and not what the public really wanted. They could get away with it because at the time there was little serious foreign competition. The same situation exists with the government now, however theirs is a perpetual monopoly.

Fair enough. I probably should have asked "have they done anything NEW that was important."

Clinton's near balanced budgets and Bush's tax cuts.

Even a blind squirrel finds a few acorns...

There was also the 20 year Republican push to create "self regulated banking" and "cutting red tape" to create the "Ownership Society"... and then the bailout of the perps...

I agree. Gridlock is our friend, our best friend.

The TARP and Mr Obama's Stimulus package kept the US out of a 1930's type economic depression.

Isn't it the job of Republicans to prevent the government from doing anything important? They've been doing a fine job of it having controlled both houses of congress 14 out of the last 20 years.

The creation of DHS is probably the biggest thing. Good luck killing this beast.

I don't considering giving special legal privaleges to banks to be "self-regulated banking". Clinton was the one who signed bankster's welfare into law anyway, and the only real Republican voted against it.

Yes.

Under the socialist dictator's rule and order; they are harvesting young virgin white women for the satan worshiping muslim leader of the United State of America.

They are also out to take your guns and make your children no longer believe in God.

They want you enslaved to the government (not the rich,... they can do no harm).

They also want all white people dead - which is why they force news channels to report when a white person steals a pack of cigarettes, but don't utter a peep about the millions of white people who get murdered daily by the roaming gangs of non-white people in America.

They have opened the borders for drug dealers to come in and get us all addicted to drugs. It's not the average American's drug habit that is drawing these violent criminals into our country,.. it's the violent criminals themselves; they are forcing the drugs down our throat. I mean,... it would be cool if the violence was kept at bay while the American public continues to snort, shoot and smoke drugs,... but, it's the government that is allowing this violence!! Not the money we keep spending to buy illegal narcotics!!!
