Has the Discovery Channel and TLC (and History Channel somewhat) gone downhill?

I used to love the Discovery Channel back in the day, but they run Police/Crime shows all of the time. In the mornings on Discovery and TLC it is nothing but home improvement and decorating shows, followed by some baby and wedding stories. TLC continues out the day with an onslaught of more home improvement shows and medical shows.

The History Channel is still decent, but occasionally shows like The XY Factor: Hitler's Personal Sex Toys or The History of Anal Sex comes on and I can't help but think that the History Channel is slowly but surely dying off as well. I guess I need to stop watching TV anyways, but damn these were the last 3 decent channels on TV. :(

Anywho, the Travel Channel has become increasingly interesting (when they are not playing shows about either Vegas or Theme Parks).

I agree...but they are just trying to appeal to the masses. Heh...you forgot to mention all of the Alien/UFO/Area 51 shows that are always on. I still like to watch History's Mysteries on HC, though.

What also pisses me off is that I don't get Discovery Civilization on Dish Network anymore..I think it changed to Discovery Times. It's like the current news in documentary form! Give me back documentaries on ancient history, bastards! :(

Ever since they started showing Trading Spaces and While you were out and the growing number of reality shows, yes, it has gone downhill. I used to watch them all the time however I mostly watch the History Channel now because they still have all their great shows and a lot less reality programming.

i used to love the military shows where they go into detail about specific models, their payloads, main uses, lots of action shots!

Yeah, I think they are going downhill. I'd like a hard science channel, but they don't have one (at least not here). Television in general is starting to suck. I'm going to get cable again, but just for football and food network. :)

Joking, but you would be suprised what does come on. The has been a History of Sex Toys, plenty of shows like Sex in the Middle Ages, ect. I'm not some sort of uber conservative ban all sex type of person, but The History of Sex Toys is just plain sad. Sex sells and these stations have to make money, but damnit they were my last refuge on the boob tube. If the History Channel goes, I might just have to start reading books. :Q

They have the Discovery Science and Discovery Wings channels that make up for it, but almost no one has these. I almost never get a chance to watch these channels so I can't really say how they are doing these days. I know they used to be great, hope they still are. Discovery Wings is about air/space travel, that's it. No fvcking reality shows, no annoying as host (R. Lee Earney), just straight up planes and rockets. The Discovery Science channel is the same way. I remember they used to have Tech Tues, Whatever Weds, etc. All of the shows focused on science, and like the Wings channel almost no cheesy filler. I wish we could get them, but they aren't offered here (that I know of).

There is also another History Channel which I would love to get, but I haven't seen it yet so no comment.

As long as TLC keeps airing Full Metal Challenge and Junkyard Wars, I am a happy camper.

I've noticed that Discovery, TLC, and the Travel channel, three of my previous favorites, have become a homogenous, bland trio that show nothing but cooking, las vegas specials, motorcycle building and a little home improvement. I miss the days of real travel shows like Lonely Planet and Rough Guide. History channel was/is my place of refuge until I can get National Geo, or something better than the current crap.

Yep, from their website. I have no problem with documentaries on sex, but this is almost every night and it's getting worse.

I love mail call.

I am very much sick of home improvement/decorating shows. My wife can't get enough of them and clogs up the tivo with them.

The History channel is my favorite, Mail Call is the best, R. Lee Ermey kicks ass. I have noticed that Discovery isn't quite what it used to be and it seems that splitting into all of the different channels is what did it. Anybody ever see the show Beyond Bizzare? Discovery only made about 3 of them(that I saw) and they were really good. That was about 8 years ago.

Does anyone remember the show Connections (at least I think that is what it was called) where that old guy would trace different things throughout the ages and see how they were related. Example would be seaweed was used to make gunpowder which was invented by so and so, who married this girl that wrote such and such...

I remember they still showed it on the Discovery Science channel a while back, not sure if they still do. I think if they brought it back it could rival Modern Marvels on the History Channel. That show was just so damn interesting.

I like Monster Garage and Monster House on Discovery. I know they are basically the guys version of Trading Spaces, but it is actually cool to see what they do to a car or house.
