Has Subaru lost it? Will they survive?

I mean, they are one heck of a niche player IMO, and they can't afford to lost their bread and butter. I saw the new Impreza for the first time on the street in DC yesterday. It was a fleet car of all things...a rental. And it looked like complete ass!!!

And now here is the WRX version.

I have not seen one in the street yet. If public reception is really bad they can always redesign part of its exteriors like they did with the Tribeca

Edit: did I see 4 tail pipes on the STI?

What was so wrong with the hardcore simplicity of the old version?

The 2004-2007 models were all fine and only needed some mechanical, interior, and options improvements.

Yep, good for owner of the older ones. I don't feel like my 04 looks any worse than the newer ones. Looks like my 04 will keep looking good for a few more years.

On the other hand, I do like what Subaru did with the look of its Forester Sports XT though. Finally there is a factory Forester that I want.

Oh dear, more generic "predator" headlights.

First of all I imagine the hatch design will be well received in Europe. The STi looks freakin' badass. The plain jane Impreza and WRX not so much IMO - esp the sedan. They tried to compete pretty directly with Mazda and I don't think it worked out for them.

They should have concentrated on lowering the starting price some, making the suspension fun but not punishing and going with a more neutral design. Sure the Mazdaspeed3 is selling well, but if Mazda had really gone out on a limb with the design it would not be as popular. What really makes it popular (IMO) is the high level of performance, fun-to-drive factor and very competitive price.

Personally I'm looking forward to see what Mitsu introduces to sit below the Evo. I'd love a more-directly-Lancer-based Evo with AWD and something like last gen's engine with a WRX price range.

Not that I'm in the market, but ya know

Call me crazy but I kinda like how that looks. No, its not better than the '04 style but I like it none the less

Most everyone hated the look of the bug eye when it first came out too. I still remember all the GC nostalgia.

I'm pretty Subaru makes almost all of it's money from cars like the Forester, they sell relatively few Impreza's by comparison. They will never be Toyota yet they seem like they want to.

A couple months ago I got my new iDrive mag in the mail introducing the world to the new WRX, and on the cover, they have a chick driving it.

No offense to chicks but that picture pretty much told me everything I needed to know about the direction of the company and in particular the Impreza.

Nothing wrong with Subaru. Just Subaru of America. I think their bread and butter is the forester and outback.

I don't mind the front of it, a little bland. If I was in the market for a nice compact rocket, Mazdaspeed3 or a new Mitsu Lancer/Evo/whatnot.

Since when has Subaru ever cared about the looks of the STI? I drive one and will be the first to admit they're not pretty cars. They're made to do one thing and do it well. Who cares what it looks like. I personally like the toned-down look to the boy-racer look. Hell my STi now has no big scoop and no wing and I like it that way.

The looks don't sell these cars. The performance does. Name one new car in it's price range that isn't the Evo that comes close to it's performance out of the box?

i like them i dunno about u guys.. I have yet to see one but i do like them..

I did like the 08 accord design untill i saw one.. YIKES...

I like all all WRX/STI designs minus the wing. This is another one of them. But i dont know about owning one as my pockets aren't as big.

I actually like it better. Interior looks VASTLY improved and aside from the grill and the altezza LED tail-lights, exterior is pretty good looking. Plus I LOVE hatches

I think the 08 STI looks great!

and hell, the new impreza just set an all time sales high for September...so yes, I do think they will survive just fine.

What he said because it makes sense 😉. Kel, you're always in Suby threads aren't cha?!

I think Subaru is trying to off themselves.
First they take away the wagon (Legacy/Impreza)
Then they take away the frameless window (Tribeca/Impreza)
Next they'll probably get rid of AWD.

No wagon, no frameless window, no AWD, its what makes a Subaru not a Subaru.
