Has nvidia found the perfect price point?

I know that a lot of people around here are in the camp that typically pays $150 to $250 for a new video card. I personally aimed for around $150 until late 2004 when I found a great deal on a 6800 NU for $200 with a free copy of Half-Life 2. Normally when the videocard companies come out with new cards they have a $500+ card, a $400 card, and a $200 card and I am always looking at the $200 and dreaming about the higher priced ones.

Finally nVidia has come to its senses and offered a high end card that is somewhat affordable. I know it has to do with the 90 nm process being cheaper to produce, but with all the places selling out of 7900 gt's so fast I think they might reconsider there future pricing. I think that they are catching a lot more of the mainstream gamers with this deal, what does everyone else think?

I'd buy one for $300.00... I'm like you though, I would always buy the cheap one and dream of owning the $600.00 one... :)

I think $300 is better, but still a bit steep. I'll be saving up to get one in June (hopefully).

Nope, $300 is still to much.
I keep my price range in the $100 area. Got my X800 PCIe for less then $80 and that replaced my 9800 agp card.

I stay under $200, before rebates. Which isn't really that hard since I play at 1024x768 with no AA and minimal AF.

My price range is 100 bucks too. However, if Elder Scrolls: Oblivion runs fine on this pc (P4 2.8, 1 gig ddr ram, Radeon 9800 pro) then I wont need to upgrade for a long long time.

$300 is more reasonable than what it originally was, but still a little steep. The most I've ever spent on a video card is $200 when I bought a new 6600GT.

I agree that $300 is a little steep, but in my situation I know I won't be upgrading for a long time, so it would be nice to have something that will last me. Also, considering that it has the performance of a $450 card, and possibly more if overclocked high enough, I was able to justify it in my own mind.

$150 is still my pricepoint.. if that even.. I don't really game anymore.. not sure what card I'll get when I nab my dual core system. if something can be used in aiding for video encoding then I would be biased to that

I guess i never understood the point in paying double for a card that will only offer 15% better performance.

That is what I have always said. But I think the 7900 gt has way more than 15% better performance than any $150 card out there.

i dunno, with cards like the x1900 or whatever..seems like mass shaders is the future no?

plus, nvidia charges for purevideo

150 is the sweet spot for me. 300 is just hard to justify for a game.

I doubt Oblivion will run fine on a 9800 Pro. Morrowind ran terribly on high end cards when it was first released. That said, I've been putting off upgrading my computer until Oblivion comes out. :D

Come on Mat, you have all that oil money, you should splurge and get yourself a nice card.;)

300 is steep. Its a lot better than those $400 - $500 cards. Nonetheless prices on these cards have gotten out of control. I picked up my geforce I card the week they came out for ~$180, which I felt was nuts at the time.

Also, you used to be able to get afew games with your card. Not sure if anyone does this any more, used to make the price a bit more attractive.
I remeber getting a special version of quake II that was like 1/3 of the entire game with one card I bought.

I'm never paying more than 250 for a card. When i bought a 5900 Ultra for 400 dollars, that was the end of that.

$300 = sweet spot
I paid $310 for my 7800GT + CoD2 back in December, and I wouldn't mind paying $300 for a 7900GT either.

Considering that I spent $400 on my 6800GT when it came out, and have been very happy with it, I think $300 for the 7900GT is a great price.

I agree $250 is my limit. It's nuts to pay even that much as quick as the prices drop on these darned things.

P.S. wrong forum for this topic. :p
