Has nayone done any DIY Lens calibration?

Looks like they sell products which help you detect how out of focus the camera and lens combination is; however, they look like something you could make with a meter stick and some printed targets. I also see DIY instructions online for how to make such items. Anyone attempted this? I have the Sigma USB dock, but need this sort of tool also. The question is did the DIY work for you? Pay for a pre made kit? Do it some other way?

i bought the Focal Lens Calibration program about a year ago. I think i bought the mid-tier version. Probably could have save a few bucks with just the base tier version as i don't use the other features.

It does work. When I had my 5D2, the process was painless and automatic, one-click and set. With my 5D3 it can't do auto, so i have to change the calibration setting between each shutter click. The process takes about 10 minutes now, compared to like 2 minutes on auto mode. I would recommend the base version if all you're doing is adjusting focus.

On my 50 1.2 it made a pretty good difference. Very noticeable.

edit: i tried the yard stick/printed target method before. found it too tedious...the focal method makes its so much easier...but then once you calibrate a lens you pretty much have no use for it any more...
