Has Monday Night Football always been on cable only?

Pretty disappointed to find out the games were only on espn cable after already picking up a 20 case of beer.

This is its first year on ESPN. It was on ABC for 36 years prior to that.

Haven't been following the games much last season but now that I got a hdtv I'm trying to make the most of it.

I have the tv but no cable...yet. I'll probably switch over to HD cable once the seasons get halfway as the games start to get better. The Colts and Giants game in 1080i OTA was pretty damn good.
