Has HP really lost it?

I recently was in the market for a new printer and noticed something odd: I didnt' even consider getting an H.P. I remember 5 years ago telling everyone to always buy HP printers and that they were high quality printers that'll last a lifetime. I even had an HP laser jet 2 that lasted like 10 years! Though, for some reason, HP was just not on my shopping list. I bought a laser printer 2 years ago and just went with a brother - there was no compelling reason for me to spend the extra money on the HP since their printers seem kinda flimsy now. My new printer is a canon i560 and the decision was between an epson and the canon - am I the victim of great marketing by those companies or is HP really losing it's edge?
 
I don't consider HP anymore because of the high cost of their ink. I like Canon now. I have a canon printer, canon digital camera, and a canon scanner.
 
HP may have lost their edge to consumer based printers (although I doubt it), however, they still are big in the office/production area. Almost all if not all of our lasers (at least 100 of them campus wide) are HP.

I used to own a canon printer, but it was a POS. Actually, the one my parents had was a piece as well. They were the BJC4200 and the BJC6000. The 6000 was nice because it used seperate cartridges for the colors, but the paper feeding system sucked.

I remember making fun of those bubblejets! I always thought that they looked like toys. Their new iSeries printers seem to be great though.
 
I went back to HP because the last two Brothers I bought crapped out or just didn't provide the functionality/ease of use I was expecting.

You're right - I've never seen a corporation that uses anything but HPs..But do they deserve that market share or is it sorta like how intel dominates the corporate world (let's not get into an intel vs. amd debate - i'm just saying that their long presence in the field allows them to have a monopoly of sorts).
 
HP still makes some pretty good stuff, although their ink is $$. $25 for a color ink cartridge for my OfficeJet = 🙁
 
coming from experience of working in an office store. hp definitely has good quality but the price is ehh. canon is good price but quality not up to hp standard.

Maybe you're a good person to ask - has HP really made the same printer for the past 3 or 4 years? I had an HP deskjet 810 and they make printers that STILL use the same ink - consistancey is good but it appears to me that they really haven't been making better printers. Epson and HP have switched to a multi-ink system- has HP?
 
Samsung and Brother offer better price/performance for personal lasers, but I'd still go with HP for a shared or high-volume office laser.
 
All we use at my company, is HP. HP inkjets kind of suck, if you use them a ton, but I have had mine for over 5 years, and it still works great.

HP Laserjets are superior to anything I have seen though... kind of expensive, but what do you expect out of something that will print a few million sheets in it's lifetime?

its pretty much new technology thats why all cartridges are now different (15,45,23,78,56,57,58)
new photo printers are a separate line. the physical aspects they keep changing now but nothing on the inside. add a page or 2 to printspeed and a new model walaah.
 
Ive always owned HP, they give me little trouble. Sure their ink is kinda expensive, but how often do I use the printer anyway?
 
as for quality, because hp uses the most ink in printing it seems like it definitely looks much better than say lexmark, canon, or epson.

Yup same here.
 
HP still makes the best "All In One" machines, which is what a lot of people are moving to. Their ink prices aren't all that bad (Lexmark for instance is OUTRAGEOUS!!!). Check out the HP 2410. I've had one for over a year and the whole family uses it. Excellent product, no-brainer printing/copying/fax (even does shared line fax), and ink prices are around $24 each at Office Depot for black, $30 for color.
 
I have an HP Deskjet 722c that's now 6 years old; it still works perfectly. However, I haven't looked at printers recently, so it's possible their quality has degraded.

And the ink really doesn't cost all that much, maybe $25 once a year, maybe three times every two years, if you buy recycled cartridges.
