Agreed, it used to be about who was the fastest, most accurate, and most skilled. Now it's about who has the best team, most patience, and uses the cheapest weapons & tactics. I've grown so bored with modern shooters I am considered giving up the genre altogether.

Serious Sam on the harder difficulty is as close to old school shooting as you will get.

why was it ever considered a kiddie shooter? seemed like a typical Star Wars esque type sci fi story to me. Both have aliens that speak english, both have multi sided story lines...etc.

as far as gameplay, halo's difference was it added vehicles and some fun AI imo. other than that you run, you shoot, you go to next level....typical of most fps's. the end.

One thing you have to take into account is that kids really get into the competitive aspect of shooters. They make teams an gamebattles/MLG and pay attention to the pro gamers, despite the fact that the "pros" aren't the best players in the world, and want to play what they play. Thus, with the larger paydays for CoD in recent years, CoD is becoming the kids' choice. Also, they emulate what they see their parents do and most of us are playing CoD, or have at some point. Kids notice these things.

WOW!

You're like the only parent I know who gives a shit if his kid sees murder and rape in the video games.
Most parents still dont have a clue. I thought the Mortal Kombat scare of the 90's woke them up.
Yeah. I'm sick of 12 yr olds going un-monitored on xbox live.
I hate legislation, but I would love it if we had to swipe our ID or DL to sign into xbox.

I'm playing Halo: Reach at the moment and there are plenty of obnoxious 12 year olds on there, unfortunately. They haven't given up on it.

they should have adult only servers where you must prove your age first. i guess do it like pr0n sites do, use CC info to verify your over 18 i suppose. naturally kids could find ways around it but most wont bother i don't think if there are plenty of other servers.

Whether it's COD or Halo, there are always obnoxious 12 yr olds, making stupid sounds to annoy you. I just hit mute on them.

Halo was never cool to begin with, so the answer is most certainly no.

i thought it was fun back then. most others at the time didn't have any kind of operable vehicles or NPC's that would fight with you, not much help really but made it more interesting with them being around on occasion. As apposed to the other fps's where you just ran around on foot...always alone, usually with rather boring weapons imo.

I suppose, but I really wish adventure games would come back in a big way.

When I was a teenager I loved Doom AND Monkey Island and Full throttle, like, just as much. Then I played Grim Fandango and I was blown away.

I just wish we had more well written, funny, story driven games for kids.

maybe not on consoles, but they are pretty big on PC again, especially with indie companies

never seen this many adventure games available in such a long time.

doom isn't an "adventure" game like the others.

Not sure it was ever 'cool' exactly, just damn good. Halo Reach is my favourite shooter FPS at the moment on any system.

...I don't even know where to begin.

Yes I'm fully aware of what genre Doom belongs too Mr Pontifex, I mentioned the game to provide contrast. Back in the day I loved playing shooters as much as I loved playing adventure games. Today the adventure genre--though still prevalent--isn't as fantastical as it use to be (or maybe I'm just more jaded).

Oh I know, all too well. I've spent all day playing Reach to get the last achievement I need. Twice the required map/mode came up and twice it was voted down for Slayer (deathmatch). The Invasion map type rarely ever comes up, slayer ALWAYS comes up. Like you can't go one round without playing slayer, it's not like it will kill you. If I could punch people in the face over the internet I would be in jail by now.

I grew up on Quake and UT, and modern day shooters don't really appeal to me either. I wouldn't say they're bad games, but I just don't like how complex they've become. Can't aim well while jumping, recoil, dying easily. I understand the want for realism, it's just not for me. Slows down the pace of the game to a point that I just don't find enjoyable.

I want rocket jumping with quad damage and pentagram of protection.
