I was looking through a Dell catalogue that came in my mail today and I noticed every computer featured had a TFT flat panel display. Has Dell stopped putting CRTs with their systems altogether? I thought gamers are still digging the CRTs since there is no response time to worry about.

They probably are, due to the fact that Sony is stopping production of 17 & 19 Trinitron monitorsand these are what Dell has used to build their monitors. Sony will continue production of only the 21 inch monitor. See this ExtremeTech article. Notice that the article says that "Sharp, Matsushita, and Hitachi all have pulled out of the CRT tube business, and their display divisions have either purchased tubes from companies like Toshiba or exited the CRT monitor business altogether in favor of LCDs." The fact that flat screen prices keep dropping is just another factor, plus they cost less to ship, and that's a big deal in itself.

Putting it in prespectiv the price of a 15 inch TFT have reached the price fo a 15 inch Trinitron CRT in 1998....
CRT technology is definately not going to be found in computer displays for too much longer.......at least in places which are technologically advance....

Yes, they still are offering crt's with their systems, though with the prices falling like they are for the flat panel monitors it won't be long till everyone can afford a 15".

They will probably start pushing their LCD monitors more than CRT's. I seriously doubt they will eliminate CRT's from their line for some time to come. LCD's have to come down in price equal to or less than CRT's. Why? Businesses don't want to pay the bottom dollar and right now LCD is far from bottom dollar. Since business sales account for over 75% of Dell revenue we're not going to be seeing an immediate change.

DOn't hold your breath. Your CRT will grow old and die before OLED is affordable.

Looking at the price competition in the 17-19 CRT area I can see why Sony called it quits. Their monitors were just too much money.
I have a 21" CRT Sony G520P for graphic work. I can't stand looking at no color depth on an LCD. FOr everyday use however most find the LCD good enough.
Dell must not be selling that many CRTs either. I'm a little suprised the price difference is still considerable.
Space saving is what sells them....no doubt. People like that.

What is an OLED?
Organic Light Emitting Diodes

Pretty cool tech, and advancing as expecting the new shavers that were advertised with the last bond movie uses the first consummer level OLED. I think it's not quite as far as we would think but the price range is pretty far out of reach of the normal consumer for some time.

Eh, shavers? I thought we were talking about displays here.
Well the shaver has like an LCD (not really since it is OLED) indicator to show battery life and junk. Monochrome display for the OLED for now but somewhat impressive that the technology is advancing.

I was price checking some Dell systems the other day, and still saw the full range of CRT options in the online system configuration tool. Wouldn't surprise me if they're pushing the LCD's in the catalogue, though, just for the sleekness factor.

And as for businesses using CRT vs. LCD, that's not such a straight call. LCD's do suck a lot less power than a CRT. A small premium for the LCD at purchase might well be compensated by power savings in the long run, especially if the machines run all day. You'd have to do the math...
