Has Crucial gone MAD?! $96.00 per stick of 256MB PC2100!!!!

HOW CAN THE SELL IT FOR THAT PRICE?!?! Just a few weeks ago it was $77.00! We should protest by initiating a Boycott or something of that nature.

Supply and demand...I don't think protesting will do it...RAM prices are up everywhere.

And in all actuality, you save more on total price due to low shipping costs.

What can you do? Yeah, it's expensive compared to 6 months ago (or even 1 month), but look further back. I bought a 64MB stick of PC-100 2 years ago for $89. Today I got my 256MB of Crucial PC-2100 for $96. Four times the memory (and a lot faster) for the same price. I think we all got spoiled last year. We should have seen it coming when they announced the first P4 DDR chipset.

Generic 32mb "PC66" SDRAM 5 years ago, $120.00. (I'd go back further, but I always like remembering my PMMX233 system 🙂)

Crucial 256mb PC133 SDRAM 1.5-2.5 years ago, $96.00.

Crucial 256mb PC2100 DDR SDRAM for $96 today? sounds fair 🙂

The cause of this is probably the demand for DDR due to the P4 DDR chipset, i845-B. We should have seen it comming. :-(

Rambus is way less expensive now.

Maybe some techs @ the Crucial facility spilled some water on the equipment? Now we must pay for their mistakes.

😀

Yeah, I feel it is crazy too. Thats why im not buying it... I have 512MB of SDr and that is OK for me.... really I cant notice the difference in performance between my xp 1700+ with SDR and my buddy's with DDR.... he has a Radeon 8500 over my Radeon 64mb DDR and I dont notice any differnce in performance in anything at all.... it just goes to show that benchmarks may be useful in some instances, but what counts is what it is actally like when your playing the game.

It's call supply and demand, my friend.

I can recall a few summers ago 256 PC133 was almost into the low $200's coming down in price. So don't complain, we still got it pretty good.

In Crucial's defense, they're ahead of the curve. Because their operation is closer to Dell's "built to order" system, they have a small lead time. As a result, their price is more in check with current market prices. This results in quick price drops like what we saw a year ago(they were well ahead in price drops than others), but it also means that they're ahead of the others in price increases. Once the current supply of cheap RAM is exhausted, everyone will be about even again.

Oh, and you're looking at the wrong prices/memory guys.😛 The $96 is the regular price of PC2100 ECC Registered memory. The usual stuff we use(and usually, all that non-pro mobos support), non-registered unbuffered, has a web price of $66.59, significantly less than the price you're worrying about.

Undoubtedly. Those of us who were paying attention did see it coming. I bought 512MB in late October, it was shortly thereafter that prices slowly started to rise and just kept on rising. I remember posting about some of the consolidation that was beginning to hit the industry as well as the pending DDR chipset from Intel. Most people just laughed. I think they're crying now. 😉

Rambus is way less expensive now.

Not quite. Depending on where you buy, it's pretty much at parity.

I have a stick of this tucked away for a rainy day sale 🙂

Got it on the BB thing when it was $25. Can't decide when I should sell it. Every few days it keeps going up. Wonder if it'll get up to like $175+ like memory was a few years ago (128 PC133 was $175). Buy low sell high 😎

Whatch-U-talkin'-bout-Willis?

<< I remember paying $50 bucks for 1MB 30pin SIMM 🙂 >>

You and me both my friend. I dropped $400 for 8 1mb simms for my 486. Man, now that machine was a screamer 😛

Around november of 2001, I paid $18 for a stick of crucial PC100 SDRAM 😀 free shipping too. I'm glad I bought 2 of them when I did
