I never call anyone unless I have something to say, so I always leave a message, even if it is just to ask them to call me. Usually I will leave a detailed message with my reason for calling, so they will have thought about the subject and will be prepared to talk about it.

This goes back to my hatred of the phone, and that fact that I will never call someone "just to chat". If I want to talk with a friend, I will call and asked them to go out for a coffee (or a beer), but I can't stand chatting on the phone.

So... you never call anyone long distance to catch up? Do you not have any friends outside of your town or do you just let those people go and forget about them?

Voicemail is extremely necessary for when you need important information or when you need to get back to someone in a hurry. Just seeing their number on caller id won't do that, but I'm sure there will be "caller textmail" soon. On cell phones I believe they already have this.

if its the casual "sup?" I send a text msg.
if its the "just wondering what you were doing?" I call, let it ring twice, and hang up.
if its important, i wait for the 5-8 rings and leave a msg.
