Has caller ID obsoleted the casual voicemail?

So someone recently gave me some half-joking grief for calling but never leaving a message. But when I think about it, my stance is that the presence of my number on your caller ID is the equivalent of me saying "Hey, it's AStar617, give me a call when you get a sec, thx". If it was really that big a deal, or there was a pointed question etc. to convey, I'd leave details. I tend to treat incoming calls the same way.

Anyone else take this approach, or do you still spell out every detail of a casual voicemail?

I pretty much operate the same way unless there's a specific reason for my call or it's for business. You should remember though, that not everyone HAS caller ID.

I always leave a voicemail. If it's a friendly call it's more friendly, and if it's a professional call, it's more professional.

i don't know how to check my voice mail

i only leave messages/voicemail if it was someone i didn't really want to talk to anyway, that way they will hopefully not call me back

I usually say hey its <name>, I was calling for <something>, call me back whenever you can, bye.

I don't care if people call and don't leave a voice mail but they're far more likely to get a return call by leaving one
what I really dislike though is people who leave blank voice mails, that pisses me off.

I don't have voicemail or caller ID or call waiting, although I do have an answering machine.

If I just have a number on callerID, I assume they don't want a call back. If they leave a voicemail, I know they do.

this is exactly my thinking - its very circumstantial based on whether I want to talk to them or not, but usually I don't like calling people so no voice mail = (almost always) no call back

No. If you leave a message they might not need to call you back - ie "the movie starts at 9:30, meet you at the window."

I never call anyone unless I have something to say, so I always leave a message, even if it is just to ask them to call me. Usually I will leave a detailed message with my reason for calling, so they will have thought about the subject and will be prepared to talk about it.

This goes back to my hatred of the phone, and that fact that I will never call someone "just to chat". If I want to talk with a friend, I will call and asked them to go out for a coffee (or a beer), but I can't stand chatting on the phone.

People give me the same thing. I hate talking onthe phone and I hate leaving msgs even more. of course if it is for business I will leave a msg, but if its a casual thing I'll just let them call me back later. I figure, you see I called, if you my friend, your gonna call me back to see whats up...

If it's not important enough to leave a message, it's not important enough to call back.

I usually call people back within 5-10 minutes so I don't bother listening to the voicemail anyway. If its been like 30 minutes since, I'll listen before I call.

I usually leave more indepth messages than that. Like, "Hey, it's Dain, I want to talk to you about that <whatever>. Call me back."

That tends to get more responses from people than saying, "let's chat."

I do the same.

Actually, I don't even return some calls when a message is left. But those usually occur over the weekend and I tend to lose my phone a lot on the weekends (not on purpose, I just forget to grab it or forget where I last left it... then it dies).

i only like face to face conversation. i dislike the phone. if i absolutely have to talk to someone about something over the phone, which is often, then at the very least i want to have a real conversation. i dont like conversing with a machine. so unless the message is of the utmost urgency or importance (or conversely extremely trivial), i will not leave a message as i prefer to save it until i can actually hear the person responding.
