Has ATOT ever done a powerbuy before?

I'm in need of (8) 500 gig or 750 gig drives at the cheapest possible price. So I was thinking if there are other people out there who need a few perhaps if enough of us got together we can get them at a cheap price. I don't know where to actually buy hard drives in bulk or at what number before a price break occurs, but I thought I would throw it out there to get a feel for what other people think.

I've seen a few 500 gig Seagates at various stores (online and b/m) for as little as 179.99, so I'm assuming that retailers are buying them for less. How much less I don't know, but if enough us get together maybe we can get the price down to about 100 bucks per drive.

It's been done before, usually on small stuff like mouse pads (I think there was one in FS/T a couple years back). It's very risky though, because you're relying on people you hardly know, and its very easy for someone to say they want one, then back out later, and the person buying the drives is stuck with an extra one.

I'd also check with the Mod to make sure it's not against the rules.

I think I read a mod comment that group buys are not allowed anymore in FS/T because of people getting burned in the past.

interesting info, maybe I'll try to pony up the money myself and sell the extras here or on Ebay. I have a few thousand bucks I can part with for a few weeks, but I would need to get a really good price before I jumped in on something like this. In the meantime I'm gonna look around the net to see where I can buy these drives in bulk.

I've heard of group buys in japan where a bunch of people will mob a retailer and negotiate a price on a particular item.

I would'nt mind doing the leg work

Lets say I could get 500 gig Seagate drives at 100 bucks a piece, I would keep the ones I needed and sell a few to any interested ATOT party for say 130. Any remainders I could probably unload at a local PC shop or either on Ebay. So it really would'nt be much work unless a few people wanted to go in with me on the initial purchase.

Unfortunately, that also violates another rule here:

No "dealers" or vendors of any kind. If you acquire items in quantity (bulk sales) with the intent of offering them for resale, here, you are a dealer under this rule. In addition, you may not place URL's in your posts, profile or signature that link to an offsite FS/T list.

It'll be up to the mods, but I'd be very doubtful if they'd let you do this.

No way you'd end up making any money on this. If newegg sells a drive for $180 then most likely you wouldn't be able to get them for less than $160. Not worth your trouble.

Yeah, wait for a Fry's sale or something. There's almost no way you could make it worth your trouble unless 1000 people prepaid for their drives before you ordered them. Even when buying a big amount, the price break would be marginal compared to a major retailer. You'll get a better deal with a 10% off coupon at Best Buy.
