I need a little help here and since you guys are so good on this board, here is where I came to see if I can get some help! :)

I just recently made a very simple webpage. Im far from a pro at this web stuff and had to follow front page help pages to get it done. I called my cable company (chater communications) where I have my online service and they told me I have 6 mb of webspace. They gave me the information I needed to know to use their server but they told me I need to use an ftp server to upload the pages. I've been told about 20 times what FTP means but as far as getting any further than that, no one can seem to tell me... ALot of people I've mentioned this to have told me they are surprised charter doesnt have one of these but Im just going with what they told me. They also said to go to tucows.com and get wsftp freeware for the ftp server. I've downloaded it and have looked thru to see if they have anytype of instructions on how to do this and there really isnt much.

Anyone know where I can get some directions on how to use this program or use a different FTP Server and find it easy to do? Like I said Im very beginner at all this stuff so any help at all is GREATLY appreciated!!!!

Thanks for your help!

First of all you need an ftp client, not a server. I recommend leapftp. Connect to the server that stores the web pages (you'll have to log in with your name and password) and drag the files in the upper left window (your computer) to the upper right window (the server).

You should be able to see what's going on in the lower right window.

If you used Microsoft FrontPage to create your web site you can use FrontPage to copy it to your web space. Simply open your web site in FrontPage, choose File->Publish Web, and enter the address of your web space (i.e., www.xyz.com/~myspace or whatever), then enter your username and password for your account and that should be all there is to it.

Sorry but I didn't read through your post. But I presume you need a ftp client instead of a server. You can try Smart FTP. It works greate and it is free.

I've always used WSFTP, both the LE and Pro editions as my FTP client. The LE version is much simpler to use, and less confusing to new users. It is free to download from sites like CNet or ZDNet... just search for FTP Clients in their software/freeware sections.

Most webpage-creation software, like FrontPage, Adobe GoLive and Dreamweaver, will have options to publish your site to a FTP server. If you have one of these programs, check your users manual or help files for explicit instructions concerning uploading your page to your FTP server.

Hope this helps some... If you'd like specific help with WSFTP LE, feel free to email me at eshaw@psu.edu :)

My current fave is FlashFXP, I used to use AceFTP and CuteFTP, they were pretty good too.

As workin' has said front page is the easiest/fastest solution. If you would rather go with their recommendation of using an FTP CLIENT then I suggest WS_FTP LE. You do not need an ftp server to upload to your web space.

this is what I took off their website:

Access your Charter PipelineTM free web space Every Charter Pipeline customer receives free web space. To take advantage of your web space, you will first need to create your website, and then FTP it to the Charter.net servers. Here are some tips on how to do that.

Creating your website
You can create your website in any HTML editing program. There are many basic editors that offer WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) designing tools that give you the option of designing the page look and having the program write the code for you or editing the HTML yourself. Microsoft FrontPage, Netscape Composer, CoffeeCup Free HTML, and Under Construction are examples of these types of programs. The more advanced may prefer editors such as HomeSite, HotDog Professional, or HoTMetaL Pro. These and more can be found for download at such sites as www.tucows.com.

For the Macintosh user, programs such as PageSpinner and CreativePage make it easy for the beginner or more advanced. These programs can also be found at sites such as www.tucows.com.

Uploading your website
Once your site is created, you will need an FTP program to upload it. We suggest WSFTP for Windows Users and Fetch for Mac users, both of which can be downloaded at sites such as www.tucows.com.

In your FTP program, enter the following information:
Host Name: webpages.charter.net
User Name: Your Charter Pipeline User Name
Password: Your Charter Pipeline Password

Connect to the FTP server, and you are now ready to upload your site by transfering the files from your local computer drive to the ftp folder. Note that your homepage file must be named index.html.

so does this mean I do or do not need the ftp program? I've got it completed in front page and now need to go onto the next step. which is contacting them for the web information or to upload onto ftp?

thanks everyone for all your help!

I'll say it again:

If you used Microsoft FrontPage to create your web site you can use FrontPage to copy it to your web space. Simply open your web site in FrontPage, choose File->Publish Web, and enter the address of your web space (i.e., webpages.charter.net), then enter your Your Charter Pipeline User Name
and Your Charter Pipeline Password for your account and that should be all there is to it. Just follow the instructions FrontPage gives you as the process moves forward.

No ftp program needed.

I don't even use that space ;) i just put that up there as an experiment and to see if i could help :)

So in answer to your question I will leave it up until I need to post some other practice or such. I have my regular site hosted at addr.com so I really do not have need for this space.

If you are looking for a FTP client, I would recommend SecureFX by VanDyke www.vandyke.com

We use it at the office and it has ran circles around the others. However, that is just my opinion.
