Has anyone used the Chase camera phone deposit app?

I just downloaded the Chase app for Android. I'm trying to deposit a check by taking pictures of the front and back but it keeps giving me an error saying the pictures aren't clear enough. The pictures are totally fine so I don't know what else to try to get it to work. Tips?

I wonder how this works. They have to have people that actually look at the picture of the check.. right? Or other checks and balances?

What's stopping someone from submitting two pictures of the same check, even by accident.. causing a huge SNAFU?

I would think that the software would recognize duplicate checks and reject them. When I did remote deposits (with desktop check scanners and software) it was able to pick up duplicates.

Ah. I guess picture analyzing technology is more advanced than I thought.

The entire process works on reading the check effectively, something the OP is having issues with. It tries to read the MICR information and dollar amount. I'm sure the bank has some checks on their side as far as some sort of verification, but I've seen some mistakes slip through.

Aside from suggesting that you be in an ideal location (lighting and such) to take pictures, I can't think of what could be wrong, unless it's some sort of software glitch.

My sister used it on her iPhone 3 with no issues. If you can read the check fine in the picture maybe the software is having issues with the handwritten part of it?

use a black piece of paper as the background to the check so it knows check/black space.

finally got it. instead of using the whole check I tried to get a little closer, only enough to see the amount and account number, plus the signature/number on the back. that worked

It works fine, usually with ATM's taking checks with OCR now I just do that since I pass one on the way home.

The problem most have is not taking the picture properly. Either not enough light or moving too much.

That's crazy! Then do you just destroy the cheque at your end after it deposits? Or do you have to mail it in or something so the sender can get it back?
There's gotta be some scamming going on with that. Or maybe I just don't trust people enough.

Ultimately if one is redepositing checks it's no different than ordering them online and doing the same thing. At the end of the day that money gets yanked out of their account.

If you don't trust someone then you shouldn't be giving them a check anyway, it's one of the most insecure methods of payment possible.

To others, photo analyzing technology is beyond most people's comprehension. A simple police car can scan millions of license plates at a time if they were in range.

Face recognition/smile recognition has been built into cameras for years now.

This is low-hanging fruit.

With Check 21, the physical check is no longer necessary once scanned.

and if you're using checks, I guess you really have to be vigilant and record and review your statements. I'd assume a large company, like the one I have this check from, automatically checks to make sure the withdrawn amount matches the amount the check is supposed to be.

That's all done with accounting...it's been that way since business has been business.

Adding scanning is much less likely to be frauded since it's going into a bank account you have setup.

Most check fraud involves cashing checks with fake id...you'd be an idiot to deposit into your own account.

To those wondering about the physical check...I don't know of any banks except really niche market that return physical checks anymore...it's all imaged and destroyed.
