My understanding is if you get a 4790 cpu you have to get a z97 mobo. There seems to be some debate about it. I plan on getting a z97 here soon but undecided about mobos. Looking at either a ASUS z97 Sabertooth or a ASUS z97 WS. I'll be running two Saphire 290x Tri-X with it.

Incorrect. i7-4790 is Haswell refresh, which works with Z87 - The 4790 will work on Z87 with a BIOS Update. Most vendors have already provided BIOS updates for Haswell refresh, nearly all of them have.

What WONT work on Z87 is DC and Broadwell. The Devil's Canyon unlocked CPU will require Z97 and will not work with Z87 due to different power delivery mechanisms. Aside from that, all Haswell refresh CPUs do in fact work on Z87.

I just did an upgrade to a 4790 and MSI z97 Gaming 7 mobo.

My first non Asus board in a very long time. The board had some quirks, but it appears that the 1.1 BIOS fixed it.

I believe it's my first time ever using an Intel boxed cooler. Figured there's no over clocking this CPU, so it should be OK. Seeing loaded temps in the mid 70s C, so will probably go for better cooling.

So far other than some odd board quirks it's pretty impressive.
