Has anyone tried to install XP Home Edition upgrade...

without installing it over an existing OS? I have my original win98 oem cd and want to install XP as a fresh install on my hard drive. I know microsoft says you can install the upgrade as a fresh install ( which they recommed) but I cannot find out how they will verify that I have authorized OS that I can upgrade from without it being on the HD. I can save some money by buying the upgrade and I think the OEM version of win98 is acceptable for the upgrade, but I don't want to buy it if I can't install it. Thanks in advance for any help!!

Also, I noticed alot of folks prefer XP Pro around here. Is there anything wrong with XP Home Edition, if you don't plan on having a web site at home?

I just think NTFS is REALLY important... I have just lost too much data using FAT32 🙁.

Of course, my college offers XP pro for cheap, so there is no reason for me to use home 😉

Nope...nothing wrong with XP Home. It does have less features than XP Pro (Remote Desktop, etc.) , but it's the same basic OS.
