Has anyone tried the new encrypted AIM options?

I was wondering if its possible to generate your own cert, rather than pay for one. Kinda like how you can always generate your own SSL Cert for a webserver, it just pops up a warning to the user that its not signed by a recognized CA. I don't really care if the user on the other end is assured of who I am, I'm mostly interested in preventing my conversations from being sniffed.

Note: I'm on a university network where the admin's are known to sniff aim conversations out of boredom.
Note: I know trillian can do this but i'd like to stick with AIM.

There was a thread about this before. Someone mentioned a site where you can get a free certificate.
