Has anyone tried the Diamond Suprasonic dual 56k modem?

Has anyone tried this modem? I know it has 2 56k's onboard but does it really make you d/l faster or does it just allow you to d/l 2 files at the same time at about 4 to 5k a sec?

It would be worth getting if it let you d/l 8 to 10k a sec and lowered your ping to about 150 or so in first person shooters. Also can you surf the net fast and use 2 separate ISP's?

Your download speed will approximately double, as the modem binds the two streams into one connection. Your ISP has to support it, though.

Ping times will NOT get better, in fact they may get worse. The ping times on dial up are not due to throughput limitations, it's the inherent latency of dial up service. Shotgunning won't get you around this.

so in other words unless the ISP supports it the modems worth nothing but just a 56k connection? Would I d/l around 10k or so a sec? Well earthlink doesnt support it :(. If it is worth it I could change ISP's untill DSL or cable comes my way.

if you don't want to go ISDN (it's pretty expensive), and have 2 phone lines available, as well as can get an ISP that supports this, then go for it.

I wouldn't be surprised if many ISP's don't support it though, or if they did, they won't let you have it without extra costs..

I myself would love to have that.. it would be nice. I wonder if it's full duplex on each line.. hehe, theoretical 112kbps up AND down at the same time!

I've never heard about that, but it sounds like an interesting alternative to broadband, or at least till you can get broadband. But how much does it cost, and how many ISPs support it?

Some ISP's that supports it will let you pay $25 or so a month to get 2 accounts just for it. But you need 2 phone lines of course. What would happen if I connected through earthlink on one modem and say MSN on the other would I see anything from this?

Main reason I am asking is because this modem retails for $80 or more and I was offered it to me for $35 shipped used.

Don't bother with that expensive modem. You can multilink (join two connections) with about any modem in windows. I currently use a 3com pci winmodem & an Motorola Hardware 56K ISA multilink in Win2k and I connect at 93.2kbps and download about 9-10kB/s. Pings are about the same multilink or non multilink (sometimes multilink little worse >50ms). I'm almost sure you can do it with two cheapo Lucent Winmodems which are around 9 bucks in pricewatch. Beware, you cannot have two identically winmodems(some brands like 3com) in the same machine. I really don't know about lucent but Ms Article talks about winmodem drivers in general especially 3com. If you want to go sure get different brands of modems.

Also your ISP has to support it the multilink protocol or MPPP. First of all your Isp must let you log in twice and some even charge you for that. But were there isn't broadband it may be little step up.

edit/ With windows multilink you can only use on ISP i don't know about Shotgun's software though.

"Some ISP's that supports it will let you pay $25 or so a month to get 2 accounts just for it."

I wonder if my local one does.. after all, MANY 56k modem users that are on these forums ALREADY have 2 phone lines. after all, if you want the internet on all the time, you don't want to miss all your phone calls (ok I hate the phone, but that's another story).

second, from what I can gather, this thing disconnects on that line only, when a phone call comes in. I'm not sure if this is true, but if it is, then you don't even have to worry bout clogging lines.

I considered it a while back, but I'm ok with what I get right now.. still I could almost get a 128kbit/second MP3 in real time.. it's tempting!

I don't play many games online anyway, becuase 56k is just wayy too bad for games IMHO period. well, except for RTS games and others that use less network resources.

My brother has tried to get it to work effectively and it has yet to do so.

It could be that our isp does not use shotgun tech but hey.. I was in another time zone when he tried.
