Has anyone tried the Antec Sonata case yet?

I am continuing my quest for PC silence and have stumbled across this one. My question is, did you really notice a sound difference between this case and your old one?

And do yoy know where I can get one cheap?

I'm am interested too. I just saw it at BB for $129.99 but that includes a 380W True Power PS which is worth about $65 by itself. The only turn off was that it only has one 120mm fan slot!

Do you mean that it only comes with one 120mm fan? It has another one in the front I thought. Besides, I wont be overclocking.

I think the main reason its quiet is due to the 120 mm fans. One low hum 120 in back is a lot quieter than two whiny 80's...same with the front. Plus they move a decent amount of air with less RPM needed.

Im hoping someone gets a system up and running and gives us some feedback on it.

Got mine. I will be loading it up this afternoon and will try and post some feedback tommorrow. I didn't get a second 120mm fan and hope my old PAL8045 and Panaflo L1A will be very quiet.

Actually, the 120mm fan is noisy, also. Probably more so than a quiet 80mm, but it moves more air.
If you need quieter, you'll need 7v mod.

I'm taking delivery on one today...

The 380 ps also has larger and more vent holes and only one fan instead of two, which should make it quieter... Anybody have theirs up yet??

Hey...

newegg has a sonata listed in "refurb" that was probably a return for only $69.00.... somebody should snap it up... I would but I just took delivery on mine and have started to assemble the setup...

The Sonata is much more quiet than my old no-name case. It has a slow moving quiet 120mm fan that moves just as much air as a faster and lounder 80mm fan. I added the second fan, even though it mounts in a very strange place. It is on the side of the 3.5" HD rack, several inches from the front grill. I got an Antec "smart fan" for the second fan. That was probably overkill, since it is my impression that the power supply will regulate the speed of any fan down anyway, so long as the temps are OK.

The risk with this case is heat. The PS is quiet and should stay cool, but one fan can only move so much air, and the second fan does not add much to the total, given its location. I do not OC, so it is not an issue with me, but folks that do overclock, especially those that are aggressive about it, might want to look somewhere else.

I have just ordered a couple of Zalman products for my CPU and video card in hopes of making things still quieter. Little teen fans on video cards make way too much noise for their own good. Sure hope losing that fan entirely does not turn out to be a mistake.

One other thing: Antec calls this case "piano black," and I think that is pushing things a bit. It is black and sorta shiny, but the finish is nowhere near what you'll see on a black piano. I let my obsessiveness with appearances get the best of me, and put a couple of different car wax products (Meguiar's) on it to help the finish. Your mileage, and obsessiveness, may vary.

I just replaced my HTPC with one. There's still an audible hum coming from it that I can hear from about 10 feet away in a totally quiet room, but it's definitely alot quieter than my other 2 PCs.

Have you taken any steps to quiet your CPU or video fans? I think the PSU and 120mm fans are quiet, and that the humming I hear is fan/fan vibration and not from the PSU. I am really hopeful that quieting my CPU and vid will do the trick. In any case, it is already much quiet than the prior PoS.

Yup, I have my 80mm CPU fan spinning below 2000 RPM's with a Fanmate and I replaced my ATI 8500LE's heatsink/fan with a passive heatsink. I think the low hum is coming from the 120mm fan. Doesn't bug me too much though.

they're sold for $99 at newegg.com. That's where I bought mine and it came in two days... I haven't set it up yet, I'm waiting for a few more components, I may put a second 120mm panaflo in it that I've had sitting around for a while... anybody using a second 120 in it??

see my 4/5 note above. I do not think the second fan moves much air, but neither does it make much noise, so I guess I will leave mine in place.

you can also get these at staples.com They are selling for 116 but if you find a coupon or stack this with some FAR items you could get a good deal.
