I was recently talking about ADSL modems to some friends, and they mentioned the Alcatel 1000 modem; I did some research, and found out that it acts as a ethernet/dsl modem.. Am I right? anyways... I looked for it on EBay and it turns out to be really cheap. Since I'm gonna be making a network in my house... I'd would like to use an ethernet dsl modem...
Has anyone tried this modem? or at least read good/bad things about it?

thanks...

I am familiar with them. It worked fine when I had a pacbell line and DNAI as an ISP. When Pacbell took everything over and kicked off the other ISPs, I started having lots of problems. I do not think anything was wrong with the modem, Pacbell was the problem. The Alcatel 1000 does not provide any useful information to the user for diagnosing network difficulties (at least I could not find any). Maybe the firmware has been improved.

I had a lot of problems with latency and dropped packets:

End time: Fri Nov 26 21:47:16 1999

Yes, that is 2.6 seconds of latency. I think at some points I had as bad as 15 seconds. I am not sure where Pacbell was storing the packets for that long, they should have timed out.

I stopped using Pacbell around September of 2000, so this information may be a little dated. I doubt the hardware for the Alcatel 1000 has changed.

Example tickets I had before I got sick of Pacbell:

Ticket: 0424546
With: Pacbell ISDN and DSL
Phone: (800) 809-6222

Description:
Intermitent packet loss. Mainly during peak evening hours. Tried
swapping modem. Problem still exists.

From what I've heard, almost all of the alcatel 1000s going around are pretty darn old. If it works, it will work as well as any other modem, but if you want my advice, it's worth looking into getting a new Alcatel Speed Touch Home. I got mine new off ebay for 115$ shipped, and it works perfectly.
