Has anyone tried removing the low-pass filters for the DVI output on their GF3?

As described on the last page of the DVI Feature article on AT's main site.

I've got a Gainward GF3 Golden Sample hooked up to a Planar 17.4" LCD. "2D" quality is pretty damn good, as does 3D albeit for the little bit of ghosting. It says in the article that they've seen anything from no improvement to drastic improvement in quality, even on cards that had good quality before hand.

Has anyone tried this yet?

Yeah I just did it on my Visiontek...took about 15 seconds. No discernable difference in text but DVD playback is much better with PowerDVD.

As I understand it, the law pass filter capacitors when removed improve the output of both the analog and DVI signals. I modded a Gainward Geforce Pro 450, Gainward Geforce 2 Ti 500 and a PNY Geforce MX 32MB with DVI-out. All showed remarkable improvements, though the mod configuration was slightly different on each one.

Hi, i'm not new to this board, my old name was RaoulDuke but i was banned for no reason and i emailed the mods 6-10 times so it's not like i haven't done my part. I REALLY wanted to post about this so i got a friend to setup an account for me. Also if someone could help me getting my old account (RaoulDuke) that'd be great. Anyways, here's my BEFORE pics, iw ant to do the capacitor trick but i don't know what to cut off, could some of you knowledgable people help me out? Here's 3 pics i took of my Hercules Prophet II MX, thanks...

Image 1 :: Macro shot of capacitors
Image 2 :: Macro shot of capacitors
Image 3 :: Macro shot of capacitors

I hope to provide you with after shots so if you could give me a hand that'd be great, thanks a lot!

I'm still waiting, i'd love to provide before/after pics, but no one seems to want to respond :(

Is the mod really as simple as: figure out which capacitors comprise the low-pass filter and yank 'em off with needle-nose pliers? If so, I'll have to give this a try, I've never been as happy with the image quality of my GF2 as compared to my old Voodoo.....worth a shot as long as I'm not going to trash my card.

'course if I DID trash the card I'd be able to buy a GF3 and not be killed in my sleep by my wife;)

I understand that you folks are trying to remove the low-pass filters to improve video image on the DVI port, but are all of you actually using displays with DVI inputs or are you converting to something else? Please explain. I'm only aware of flat panel monitors using DVI inputs, and maybe some higher-end HT projectors, like the Marantz VP12-S1 (which is about $12K in the US).

I have an ELSA Gladiac 920 GF3, but I don't have have a DVI monitor. But I did the low pass filter removal with hopes of something happening...lol Removed the capacitors and soldered bridges over the inductors. What was the result???........

Anything colored white was fuzzy as hell and ULTRA bright!!!!! I was scared sh**less!! Luckily I messed around with my Samsung monitor menus, and found an input voltage adjustment. Once I adjusted it to 1 volt from .7, it was fine again, but it is definately sharper and clearer now. Also my FPS has increased about 15.

Is it worth doing? ONLY if you have a quality monitor with input voltage adjustment controls!!!

ForUmuse: There are some CRT monitors that support DVI input, like the NEC 1355X.
