Has anyone "tried out" a memory foam mattress & returned it?

I keep getting mailings for one of those soft, comfortable, mold-to-your-body memory foam mattresses. One advertisement offers a "free 6-month trial", and if for whatever reason at the end of of the trial if you're not satisfied, you can call them and they'll pick it up for a fee of $150 or so.

Has anyone ever done this? If so, how did it work out? I'm considering it.

And does anyone know what they do with all those used mattresses?

I have used the pillows and they tend to lose shape after a while so I don't see how a mattress would hold up over the years.

Probably throw it out... the $$ went to R&D and advertising, the actual mattress is probably quite cheap to produce. Plus they really are quite comfortable, I'd guess very few get returned. The $150 fee is probably their cost to manufacture, ship it to you, and return to pick it up.

Any thoughts - which is better? 5 lb memory foam or latex?

i have a king size latex mattress. the thing weighs like 200 lbs. i get down on my hands and knees and crawl under in order to move it. it's just too big and awkward to try and pick up with my arms.

but i can tell you, it will last much longer than 5 lb memory foam pad. ;)

Hmm..."free 6-month trial" and you get charged $150 to return it even though it says FREE 6 MONTH TRIAL? Where is that $150 coming from, i mean, c'mon, it's a free 6 mo. trial...you're trying it out and if you don't like it, you don't keep it...so why $150 fee?

anyone else wondering wtf is up with that?

My mother has one of those Tempurpedics and has been very pleased with it, but interestingly, the original mattress she received had a strange mildew smell (although it was brand-new, and I wouldn't have thought that foam would be a good medium for mildew), so she had to have it replaced.

latex is amazing, especially if you have kids and you and your spouse don't want to make too many undue noises at night.

no squeaks from a latex mattress, guaranteed. ;)

Actually just get both.

Wife and I did a 90 day home trial and they would pay the return shipping. Came in one ugly beat up box, weighed a ton (queen size)and was a beast to get to the second floor. Mattress is 2 seperate pieces of foam stuffed in the cover. Sounds terrible but I love it. Wife thinks it's a bit too hard but we both sleep well on it. Has a tendancy to get a little warm at times (properties of the memory foam) but nothing terrible. Living in a colder climate helps you appreciate it. Helped w/ a nagging shoulder pain that for years never really went away.
Person I talked to said they got about a 6% return rate, if you can believe that. Bonus "gifts" were no big shakes. Much lighter, contoured memory foam pillows. We have one "rock" pillow that is High density memory foam and I love it. The mattress is probably not the cheapest out there but worth a look.
PS If you can DON'T take it out of the box until you get it where it should go :)
Also I believe she told me they were made on demand so sometimes takes awhile :(
Came here to see the "rumored" 2 year old memory foam thread. What happened?
