Has anyone seen this connector before

In addition, the ATX specification (version 2.03 is the latest) defines an auxiliary 6-wire connector (in a 1x6 configuration) and an optional 6-wire connector (in a 2x3 configuration). The auxiliary is intended for motherboards that require a lot of power to run their components (250 W or more); it consists simply of more, thicker (AWG 16) wires for the +3.3 V and +5 V signals. The optional connector carries additional signals, as described here.

It's about half way down the page.

It's a hold over from the AT days. Its basically connector #2 from an AT PSU

Incorect, It is an aditional power connection used on server motherboards. It does not apply to AT or home use.

Humm!....interesting info.....Wonder what current motherboards have this connector on them?

Several Older ATX motherboard use them. An old ASUS Server Board comes to mind here, but I cannot remember the model.

Yup, the old AT connectors were 2 x 6-pins. And neither has the same pinout as the server Aux power connector.

Here is a quick list (but not complete) I made of ATX (not AT) motherboards that use this connection

ASUS TR-DLS
Iwill DVD266U-RN
Intel T440Bx (NL440BX)
Asus A7M266-D
Intel D925XCV
Intel SAI2
Intel SBT2

I have that on my PSU and it's always been in the way.

My question is.. since this seems pretty legacy, can I cut it off??

Look at the top corner of this Picture Above the 20 pin ATX Motherboard Connector and next to the 4pin CPU is this strage and Bizarre AUX connection that looks like a blast from the past but is not.

I wouldn't, you will then be left with open ended wires inside of a PC case full of sensitive eletrical components just begging to get shorted. Your best bet is to leave it alone and Ignore it. Who knows you may end up needing it one day.

Cutting those wires off would be like letting the pit bull run free in the chicken pen and thinking to yourself "what a great idea this is".

Just leave it as it is, it's not in the way of anything.

Yes, you can cut off any connector you aren't using - just be sure - not as easy to put back as to cut off... I suggest just folding it up and tieing it back with a zip tie or twist tie - just in case. It is fairly easy to adapt that to other uses by starting with an AT power connector extension cable (from places like computergate.com et al.). Coat the cut ends with a blob of hot glue or silicone seal for obvious reasons.

I think I'll cut it off. I hear if you strip the wires and float them a few cm away from the heatsink it will make your computer faster.

Or maybe I'll just stick to zip ties. Har har har.
