I've seen it at hollywood video, though I think racheal weiz is hot and all, looks like it didn't make sense reading the back of the box and I guess my feelings were right.

I'm still waiting for the new Hannibal to come out on DVD.

We don't know whether either the past or future stories really happen, or are just the story his wife asked him to finish.

Theory 1: both the past and future were just in her story
Theory 2: all 3 are real, reincarnation or ancestor / descendamt.
Theory 3: the past was her story, but the future is real, either through reincarnation, a descendant, OR by the present-day scientist curing death and living for thousands of years.

The tree-ship has a bubble of air around it, generated by the tree-ship or by his mind powers.

Here's my theory on it: Izzy was fascinated with Xibalba - the Nebula that the Mayans thought was the underworld, the place where all dead souls went to be brought back to life. That death itself was a part of creation. She writes a story about Spanish Queen Isabelle who sends Conquistador Tomas (the man she loves) on a journey to find the Tree of Life so that they can attain immortality. However, the Tomas doesn't make it back.

In the present day, Tommy is researching the 21st century equivalent of immortality - a cure for cancer , driven much more because of his wife than the pursuit of science. But he isn't able to save his wife in time. Like the Mayan guide (and his story about his father) Izzy once talks about, he plants a seed over her grave. That way, Izzy's spirit becomes one with the tree and she remains alive in it. At least metaphorically speaking.

Now the future thread, I have no idea whether that is Tommy finishing the story for her or is actually in the future. I think it's the story and a visual representation of his inner turmoil and the emptiness he feels in his life after Izzy is gone. He was intrigued by the whole Mayan philosophy of things so he looked after that tree for hundreds of years (long, arduous research?), hopped in his space bubble and started traveling towards Xibalba. The tree (his wife) starts to die on the journey there and it starts to really get to Tommy. However, in the end, when they finally make it, the dying tree blooms once again. This might be a metaphor for Tommy's ground-breaking cancer-research?

Ahh, now I am all confused all over again. I thought I had this movie all figured out but putting it down in words always confuses the crap out of me.

The present and future are real.
The past is Izzy's story; Izzy wrote all the way up until the Mayan leader swings the flaming sword at the conquistador. After finding eternal life through his cancer research, Tom travels to Xibalba in his spaceship and finally finishes the story by having the conquistador get eternal life...by turning into the earth. He became selfish and paid the price with his life.
Remember the trip to the museum? Izzy also told Tom about a friend that died and had a seed planted over them as a symbolic gesture. The tree grew into and through the body fusing them and giving the body eternal life; not really, but symbolically. The tree would grow fruit and the birds would eat the fruit giving the dead person on to other life. The tree in the spaceship is the seed that Izzy picked and gave to Tom to bury over her buried body after her death.
Don't get confused by the film jumping around. That's just for dramatic effect.

One of my favorite movies of all time. Watch it again and again, you will pick up little pieces at a time, and the work becomes complete.

Fantastic film, his last two films (RFAD, Fountain) make me cry every time I see them; not because they're sad but because they're beautiful. Emotional overload.

I think they did the movie a terrible disservice by having the time stamps in the trailer. I think that prevents people from really understanding what the future world is supposed to represent, not so much a time but a place or state of mind.

I thought the movie was great. The first viewing was confusing, but after reading people's comments and watching it again, it makes a lot more sense now.

The visuals and music were also very good, and fit the movie perfectly.

..that's a good synopsis of the movie. Good movie but rather depressing. Cancer usually is.

see, while Requiem for a Dream I found depressing (but beautiful), I find The Fountain uplifting and sad. It's not depressing in my mind. It's sad, because this man cares so much for his wife, but she is no longer physically there for him to care for... but it's uplifting because the whole movie is about that passionate love and his quest to let her spirit live on forever. His quest is not about eternal health for himself, but for the spirit of his wife (after her passing). It's a tribute to the power of love and the lengths some will go for it. In that respect, its uplifting to see the good side of human nature. It's only sad because he loses her (physically), although he is able to keep in good spirits through the quest to maintain her spirit's health.

It's a touching and mesmerizing tale.

whew, just finished it. I'm on emotional overload. I think I really liked it but I feel like it all needs to sink in for a night.

I didn't think the story was terribly confusing. Maybe I try not to read into stuff a whole lot. Technically speaking I thought it was really nice, the visuals were amazing - plus the whole outer space scenery being based on "real" sets and not all CG, plus music and audio were spot on.

edit: sorry to resurrect this thread from the ashes, but thought it's better to comment on an existing thread than to create a new one

it was indeed good
had never even heard of it till it arrived from netflix

it was really interesting to see the huge sets they originally built for the film, that were later trashed and auctioned in the special features.
there was also the part about how they used chemical reactions in petri dishes for the nebula, which was also very interesting

quite so. choked me up a couple times. And Hugh Jackman played the character really well. His acting was so real that at times I felt I was the scientist, watching the death of my loved one.

Confused the crap out of me. I give it a 2/10, for having Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz in it.
