Has anyone run into a program like this?

I know that documents can be scanned, and as images imported into MS Word, but I was wondering if anyone has bumped into a program that intreprets the figures on the page and puts them into word.

I've got a 38 page generic contract that needs to be able to be edited. I work for a construction company, and this is our contract agreement with a client, so obviously we need to be able to type in the specific customers names.

Any suggestions?

What is this strange idea you have come up with? Seriously, you should go to the Patent Office RIGHT NOW. A machine that can "scan" (what should we call it? A scanner perhaps) a piece of paper with printed text and then optically recognize the characters? Tell me if you ever make this into a product. I have my deposit right here!

I dont know about word, but my HP all-in-one can scan stuff into pdf files.

Yes, I know that but I want to be able to input the missing pieces of data, such as the customer names etc etc, in which case I would have to get adobe acrobat writer.

Believe clickynext indicated such software generally comes bundled with scanners, though it is also generally included with multi-functional AIO printers.

OCR = Optical Character Recognition

Should come with your scanner. I think Word might have it built in?!?! (not sure.)

Most OEM-bundled OCR software in consumer scanners is old and limited in accuracy. Top two standalone apps are OmniPage Pro and ABBYY FineReader, I believe.
